Fox CEO says more sports growth coming for Fox One
The streamer still has yet to launch an important bundle, and could add betting integrations as well.
It’s early days, but it appears that Fox One is living up to expectations. That’s one conclusion to be drawn from comments made by Lachlan Murdoch at a Goldman Sachs media and telecom conference this week. Murdoch, CEO of Fox, spoke on a number of topics, but he had the chance to linger on the new Fox One streaming service, which launched on Aug. 21. While preliminary returns are good, Murdoch also says there are plenty of things to look forward to in the streamer’s future, especially in the sports arena.
Key Details:
- Strong numbers: Initial subscriptions for Fox One have outpaced projections, according to Murdoch.
- Team-up incoming: Murdoch touted the forthcoming bundle of Fox One and ESPN.
- Wanna bet?: Fox intends to exercise an 18.6% option in FanDuel, which could lead to betting integrations.
It’s only been a few weeks since the launch of Fox One, so it’s a tad too soon to expect concrete numbers on its subscription numbers. But according to Murdoch, the internal data he’s seen so far is pretty encouraging.
“[Initial] take-up has exceeded our expectations,” the CEO said. “What you can see on Fox One is that news is really helping drive audience and reach Monday-to-Friday, but then with sports, starting with college football and now with the NFL, gives a tremendous audience and viewership and acquisition capabilities over the weekend. So the balance between news and sports, and there’s a lot of overlap in those audiences, has been very successful.”
There’s more to come for the $20 monthly streaming service, which includes streams of the Fox network, Fox cable channels like FS1 and Fox News, and more. Murdoch touted a forthcoming bundle with the new ESPN on-demand streaming service and its Unlimited plan, which costs $30 per month by itself and will run $40 with Fox One included. The bundle will be available on Oct. 2.
Murdoch said he believed it would be an “essential bundle” for American sports fans, and the combo will indeed have an impressive lineup of top games, including contests from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and college football. It’s a big step forward for customers who want to access live sports traditionally found on cable while sidestepping the cable bundle.
Are sports betting integrations in the cards for Fox One? ESPN’s direct-to-consumer service is adding stats and more from ESPN Bet to its platform, and Murdoch indicated Fox One intends to exercise an 18.6% option in the FanDuel sportsbook before 2030. Doing so may lead to sports betting features joining the Fox One platform in the future.
