Which Harry Potter movie casts the strongest spell?

Which Harry Potter movie casts the strongest spell?

Our readers helped us rank every single movie set in the Wizarding World.

As a cord-cutter since 2010, he’s spent over 15 years covering tech and streaming for sites like TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, and CrackBerry. He also has a soft spot for '80s movies.

It’s been more than 20 years since “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” brought J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world to the big screen, launching one of the most successful film franchises of all time. Over the next decade, the film franchise evolved in tone and scope, shifting from light-hearted adventure to something far darker, more emotional, and ultimately more ambitious.

Earlier this month, we solicited your help in picking out the best of the series, and like any long-running franchise, the results were mixed. Some entries felt essential, packed with key character moments, major plot turns, and iconic sequences. Others were clearly pained by the weight of their source material or tried to stretch thin storylines across longer-than-needed runtimes. The earliest films turned out to be the most loved, while the later installments didn’t fare so well in our rankings. And then came the “Fantastic Beasts” spinoffs, which unsurprisingly landed at the bottom of the list.

With new Wizarding World projects in development at Warner Bros., there’s no better time to look back at what’s worked and what hasn’t. You can stream every Harry Potter movie on HBO Max or Peacock to ensure you’re all caught up!

Here’s our definitive ranking of every Harry Potter film to date. Head down to the comments below to share your opinions about the rankings that our readers conjured up.

No. 2: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

November 16, 2001

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) has lived under the stairs at his aunt and uncle’s house his whole life. But on his 11th birthday, he learns he’s a powerful wizard — with a place waiting for him at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As he learns to harness his newfound powers with the help of the school’s kindly headmaster, Harry uncovers the truth about his parents’ deaths — and about the villain who’s to blame. This first chapter in J.K. Rowling’s wizard saga was a cultural phenomenon.

The first film in the Harry Potter saga set the tone for the entire series to come. The excellent casting cannot be under-praised. Radcliffe was the perfect Potter, Rupert Grint was a great Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson is a transcendent Hermione Granger. Director Chris Columbus leaned on his “Home Alone” experience to get incredible performances from his young cast.

Every supporting actor is excellent, too: Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore, Maggie Smith as Professor McGonagall, Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, John Hurt as Mr. Ollivander, Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, and the brilliant Alan Rickman as Professor Snape.

John Williams brings his legendary magic to the music, as well.

This film is known as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in the United States.

No. 1: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

May 31, 2004

Year three at Hogwarts means new fun and challenges as Harry learns the delicate art of approaching a Hippogriff, transforming shape-shifting Boggarts into hilarity and even turning back time. But the term also brings danger: soul-sucking Dementors hover over the school, an ally of the accursed He-Who-Cannot-Be-Named lurks within the castle walls, and fearsome wizard Sirius Black escapes Azkaban. And Harry will confront them all.

Major changes come to the series with this film. Director Alfonso Cuarón provided a more mature tone to suit the material. The cast expanded with Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, David Thewlis as Remus Lupin, and Emma Thompson as Sybill Trelawney. Michael Gambon also joined the cast as Albus Dumbledore after Richard Harris’ death.
