Netflix is unleashing a cursed warrior in ‘Barbaric’
Based on the hit Vault Comics series, ‘Barbaric’ follows a cursed warrior, a talking axe, and a young witch.
Netflix is going full medieval chaos with “Barbaric,” and this one sounds like an absolute blast. The new fantasy series is based on the bestselling Vault Comics series about a foul-mouthed barbarian who gets cursed into doing good, whether he likes it or not. Throw in a talking axe, a young witch, a revenge mission, and a whole lot of violence, and you can see why the comic has been described as “Deadpool” meets “Game of Thrones.” That’s a ridiculous combination in the best way. Here’s everything you need to know before “Barbaric” hits Netflix.
Everything you need to know about ‘Barbaric’
When does ‘Barbaric’ come out?
“Barbaric” doesn’t have a release date yet, but Netflix has officially ordered the series. There hasn’t been an announcement regarding when filming will begin or when the show will start streaming, but the process is in motion. The series has its showrunners and producers in place, but the cast is still being finalized. If things proceed on schedule, it is likely that the show will debut sometime in 2027.
Can you watch ‘Barbaric’ for free once it starts streaming?
Probably not. Since Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial anymore, you’ll need an active subscription to watch “Barbaric” when it arrives. The cheapest plan starts at $9 per month with ads, while the ad-free plans cost $20 per month and $27 per month. That said, Netflix may have started offering free trials in other territories, so keep checking back to see if and when that could extend to the U.S.
What is ‘Barbaric’ about?
“Barbaric” follows a ruthless, rude, and extremely violent barbarian who suddenly gets hit with a pretty inconvenient curse — one that forces him to only use violence to help people. For a guy whose entire personality seems to be built around smashing things first and never asking questions, that’s obviously going to create some problems.
He heads out on the road with a talking axe and a young witch, and the three of them get pulled into a story about revenge, redemption, and figuring out what kind of person this barbarian actually wants to be. The whole thing sounds like a very bloody fantasy adventure that knows how ridiculous it is. Expect monsters, magic, dark comedy, and plenty of arguments between a barbarian and his own weapon.
Who stars in ‘Barbaric’?
No cast members are officially locked in yet. Sam Claflin was previously attached to play the barbarian when the project first entered development in 2024, and Patrick Stewart was attached to voice the talking axe. But Netflix says those deals still haven’t been finalized, so neither actor is officially confirmed right now.
Claflin is still involved behind the scenes as an executive producer through Soft Claw Productions, alongside Luke Carroll and Michael Stevenson. So even if he doesn’t end up swinging the axe himself, he’s still helping bring the series together.
Who is making ‘Barbaric’?
“Barbaric” is written and co-run by Sheldon Turner, the Oscar-nominated writer behind “Up in the Air” and “X-Men: First Class.” Robert Rovner, who worked on “Supergirl,” will co-showrun the series with him. The original comic is created by writer Michael Moreci and illustrator Nathan Gooden, with Adrian Wassel serving as editor.
