What is ‘Ballard’ about?

Fresh off of the heels of the series finale of “Bosch: Legacy,” the new series “Ballard” continues to bring the world of Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels to life. This series focuses on Detective Renée Ballard as she leads the LAPD’s new and underfunded cold case division.

The show will focus on Ballard as she tackles the city’s most challenging, long-forgotten crimes with empathy and relentless determination. As she peels back layers of crimes spanning decades, she stumbles across a murdered John Doe who tie into a string of serial killer victims.

As she investigates, Ballard soon uncovers a dangerous conspiracy within the LAPD that puts her in danger. However, with the help of her volunteer team and retired detective Harry Bosch, she faces personal trauma, professional challenges, and life-threatening dangers to expose the truth.

Who stars in the movie ‘Ballard’?

Maggie Q stars as the show’s title character, Detective Renée Ballard. She is the head of the Los Angeles Police Department’s cold case unit.

She will be joined in the series by Courtney Taylor as Samira Parker, John Carroll Lynch as Thomas Laffont, Michael Mosley as Ted Rawls, Rebecca Field as Colleen Hatteras, Victoria Moroles as Martina Castro, Amy Hill as Tutu, Ricardo Chavira as Detective Robert Olivas, Noah Bean as Jake Pearlman, Alain Uy as Nelson Hastings, and Hector Hugo as Captain Berchem.

Titus Welliver has also been confirmed to appear in the series, but to what degree is not know, but more on that below.

Like both “Bosch” series before it, “Ballard” is based on novels written by Michael Connelly, who serves as an executive producer on the show. In the books, Harry Bosch and Renée Ballard are in the same universe, eventually working together once the latter takes over the LAPD’s cold case unit.

On screen, Maggie Q debuted as Detective Ballard in the “Bosch: Legacy” series finale in April 2025, setting up her spinoff series. In that episode, Ballard and Bosch investigate the Flower Girl cold case, with the more experienced Bosch serving as an unconventional mentor.

It has been confirmed that Titus Welliver will reprise his role as Harry Bosch in the series, but it is not yet clear how much of a presence he will have on “Ballard.” Fortunately, Prime Video has 98 episodes of the to Bosch-focused series available to stream at any time.

Unfortunately for fans of the hit Netflix series “The Lincoln Lawyer,” there will almost certainly not be any crossovers with “Ballard,” despite the fact that the characters do occupy the same literary universe. While there have been indirect collaborations between them in the novels, it has almost always come with Bosch as an intermediary.

However, since Netflix has the rights to Mickey Haller (the Lincoln lawyer) with Amazon owning the rights to Bosch and Ballard, it is next to impossible for the characters to cross paths on screen.
