A new series adaptation on ‘Carrie’ brings horror to high school
Mike Flanagan is turning Stephen King’s classic into an eight-episode series with a modern take on Carrie White’s story.
More than 50 years after Stephen King first introduced readers to Carrie White, one of horror’s most famous teenagers is heading back to the screen — this time with a lot more room to tell her story. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, all eight episodes of “Carrie” premiere exclusively on Prime Video, with “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass” creator Mike Flanagan putting his own spin on King’s classic tale of high school cruelty, oppressive home life, and some increasingly dangerous telekinetic powers. The series drops at 3:01 a.m. ET, and you can watch with a 30-day free trial to Prime Video.

Everything you need to know about ‘Carrie’
When does ‘Carrie’ come out?
Prime Video has announced that “Carrie” will kick off early in Spooky Season. All eight episodes of the limited series will premiere on the streamer on Wednesday, Oct. 7, giving you plenty of time to binge them all in the lead-up to Halloween.
Can you watch ‘Carrie’ for free once it starts streaming?
Probably! Prime Video currently gives new Amazon Prime members a 30-day free trial, so if that deal is still around when “Carrie” premieres, you should be able to start watching without paying right away. Prime Video is also included with a regular Amazon Prime membership, which is how I get it, or you can subscribe on its own for $9 per month with ads.

What is ‘Carrie’ about?
“Carrie” follows Carrie White, a sheltered high-school student who’s spent most of her life cut off from the outside world by her controlling, deeply religious mother. Then her father suddenly dies, and Carrie gets dropped into public high school, which goes about as badly as you’d expect. She’s dealing with a totally new social world, brutal bullying, and a scandal that starts ripping through the whole community.
This version of the story puts Carrie in a modern world, where she has to deal with new types of cruelty in an increasingly complex world. At the same time, she starts realizing she has telekinetic powers. And if you know even the basics of “Carrie,” you already know this probably isn’t ending with everyone sitting down and working things out.

Who stars in ‘Carrie’?
Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan as her domineering mother, Margaret White. The main cast also includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Josie Totah as Tina Blake, Arthur Conti as Billy Nolan, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Rita Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
The recurring cast is pretty loaded too, with Heather Graham, Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Katee Sackhoff, Rahul Kohli, Crystal Balint, Danielle Klaudt, Tim Bagley, Tahmoh Penikett, Mapuana Makia, Naika Toussaint, Delainey Hayles, Cassandra Naud, and Rowan Danielle all showing up.
Who’s making ‘Carrie’?
Mike Flanagan writes and serves as showrunner on “Carrie,” and he’s also directing some of the eight episodes for Amazon MGM Studios. Honestly, that’s the main reason I’m excited about this version. Flanagan has already made some great Stephen King adaptations, including “Gerald’s Game” and “The Life of Chuck,” and he’s also the guy behind “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass.” He’s really good at taking horror stories and making them feel sad, personal, and very human, which sounds like a great match for Carrie White.
This is also the first time King’s novel is becoming a full TV series, which means Flanagan has way more room to dig into Carrie, her mother, the other students, and the whole town around them. The story is getting moved into the present day too, with social media and online bullying becoming part of what Carrie goes through. “Carrie” is one of the first big projects in Flanagan’s Amazon deal, and it already feels like a pretty major test of what his new run at Prime Video is going to look like.
Carrie
Withdrawn and sensitive teenager Carrie White faces bullying from her classmates and abuse from her fanatically pious mother. When she begins to suspect that she has supernatural powers, things take a dark and violent turn.
