A masked killer targets prom queen hopefuls in this standalone Netflix horror.
I was a “Goosebumps” kid through and through, so R.L. Stine was basically my gateway drug to horror. But I didn’t start reading the “Fear Street” books until way later — turns out, they’re even more twisted (in the best way). The recent wave of “Fear Street” movies has totally revived the franchise, and now there’s another bloody adaptation on the way: “Fear Street: Prom Queen.” Set during prom season in 1988, this slasher throwback takes us back to Shadyside High, where It Girls are vanishing one by one — and a masked killer is crashing the party. It premieres Friday, May 23, only on Netflix.

Everything you need to know about ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’
What time will the movie ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ become available?
“Fear Street: Prom Queen” premieres Friday, May 23, 2025, only on Netflix. While Netflix hasn’t officially announced the exact drop time, most of its original films go live at 3 a.m. ET (midnight PT). So if you’re on the West Coast, you might be able to kick off prom night a little early.
Why do we recommend Netflix for watching ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’?
Netflix is the only place to stream “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” so if you want to watch the full movie when it drops, that’s where you’ll need to go. Plans start at $8 per month with ads, or you can upgrade to the ad-free plan for $18 per month. There’s also a Premium tier for $25 per month if you want 4K quality and the ability to stream on up to four devices at once.
Can you watch ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ for free?
Not this time — Netflix doesn’t currently offer a free trial, so you’ll need a paid subscription to stream “Fear Street: Prom Queen.” The most budget-friendly option is $8 per month with ads, or you can go ad-free for $18 per month if you want downloads and uninterrupted viewing. Since it’s a single movie (not a series), one month is all you’ll need to watch — then you can decide if Netflix is worth keeping.

About ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’
“Fear Street: Prom Queen” is a standalone slasher flick set in the world of R.L. Stine’s iconic horror series — and it’s the first “Fear Street” movie to be based on a specific book, 1992’s The Prom Queen. The story unfolds in 1988 at Shadyside High, where prom season turns deadly as a masked killer starts picking off the queen candidates one by one. At the center of it all is a gutsy outsider who shakes up the It Girl hierarchy, triggering a blood-soaked showdown for the crown. Directed and co-written by Matt Palmer, the movie leans hard into its ’80s slasher roots (think big hair, brutal kills, and needle drops galore) while still digging into the emotional lives of its teen characters. Now, super-dark horror I can’t really do — but pretty girls getting slashed in an ’80s wrapper? Not a bad Friday movie night.
Fear Street: Prom Queen
Who will be voted queen at Shadyside High’s 1988 prom? For underdog Lori, competition is cutthroat even before someone starts killing off the candidates.
What other horror movies can you watch on Netflix?
If “Fear Street: Prom Queen” gets you in the mood for more bloody mayhem and teen horror, Netflix has a few more great titles worth checking out. “There’s Someone Inside Your House” follows a high school senior whose classmates are being hunted by a killer revealing their darkest secrets. In “No One Gets Out Alive,” a young woman moves into a run-down boarding house — and quickly realizes something sinister is lurking in the walls. And if you want apocalyptic tension with a supernatural twist, “Bird Box” is still one of Netflix’s most gripping horror hits. All three are streaming now, with plans starting at $8/month.
