Last Seen’ stars Patrick Brammall as a former detective who believes a distress caller is his daughter, 11 years after she vanished.
I loved both seasons of “Hijack,” so Apple TV already has me trained to pay attention whenever the team behind that show starts building another thriller. Now they’re back with “Last Seen,” a six-episode Australian mystery about a former detective who receives a call from a teenage girl he believes could be his daughter, who disappeared 11 years earlier. Here’s everything you need to know before “Last Seen” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 9, when you can watch it with a seven-day free trial of Apple TV.

Can you watch episodes of ‘Last Seen’ for free?
Yep, you can watch for free. Apple TV offers a seven-day free trial for new users, so you could watch the first two episodes without paying when the series premieres. After that, you’ll need a subscription. The service costs $13 per month and keeps things simple with one main plan.
You could also wait until all six episodes are available on Oct. 7 and binge the entire series during the free trial. That might be the smarter move if you hate waiting between episodes, but with a missing-person mystery like this, avoiding spoilers for a month could get tricky.
Apple TV
Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

What is ‘Last Seen’ about?
“Last Seen” follows Ian Ridley, a former police detective whose entire life fell apart after his young daughter Maggie disappeared 11 years ago. He now works as a police dispatcher, but he has never accepted that Maggie is gone and still refuses to stop looking for her.
Then one day, Ian answers a distress call from a teenage girl and becomes convinced the voice on the other end belongs to Maggie. Obviously, that could mean he has finally found the break he has spent more than a decade waiting for. It could also mean his grief is making him hear exactly what he desperately wants to hear.
Either way, Ian throws himself back into the search and becomes willing to risk pretty much everything for the chance to bring his daughter home. That’s the part that has me hooked. This isn’t just a detective trying to solve another case. It’s a father chasing the one answer that could either put his family back together or completely destroy whatever is left of it.

Who stars in ‘Last Seen’?
Patrick Brammall leads the series as Ian Ridley. You probably know him from “Colin from Accounts,” but this role looks like a much darker turn, putting him at the center of a story built around grief, obsession, and a mystery that has consumed more than a decade of his life.
The ensemble also includes Maxine Peake, Brendan Cowell, Daniel Henshall, Jessica Wren, Zahra Newman, and newcomer Chloe Jean Lourdes. Apple TV hasn’t revealed exactly how every character fits into Ian’s search yet, but this feels like the kind of show where almost everyone could be hiding something or withholding one tiny piece of information that changes the entire case.
Who is making ‘Last Seen’?
“Last Seen” is adapted for television by Kris Mrksa, who also serves as an executive producer. Christian Schwochow directs and executive produces the series after previously working on “The Crown” and the movie “Munich: The Edge of War.”
Jamie Laurenson and Hakan Kousetta also executive produce through 60Forty Films, the company behind “Hijack,” “Slow Horses,” and “Down Cemetery Road.” That connection is a huge reason I’m excited about this one.
Is ‘Last Seen’ based on a book?
Yep, “Last Seen” is based on Ryan David Jahn’s novel “The Dispatcher.” Jahn is a crime writer who won the Crime Writers’ Association John Creasey Dagger Award, so the show is starting with a story that already has some serious mystery pedigree behind it. The series was originally being developed under the book’s title before Apple TV renamed it “Last Seen.”
