Claire Danes leads Netflix’s big new romance ‘Lovesick’
The upcoming drama stars Danes as a breast cancer surgeon whose life changes after her own diagnosis.
Netflix is bringing us a big, sweeping romance drama with “Lovesick,” and this one already sounds like it could hit hard. Claire Danes stars as Annika, a renowned breast cancer surgeon whose life changes when she receives her own cancer diagnosis. At the same time, her world starts crossing with Nate, a promising politician who becomes her patient. There’s still a lot we don’t know, but it sounds intimate, emotional, romantic, and probably pretty devastating in a good way. Here’s everything you need to know before “Lovesick” hits Netflix.
Everything you need to know about ‘Lovesick’
When does ‘Lovesick’ come out?
“Lovesick” doesn’t have a release date yet. Netflix has ordered the series, but it hasn’t announced when the show will actually start streaming. So for now, we know it’s coming, we know Claire Danes is leading it, and we know the creative team is in place. We just don’t have the official date yet.
Can you watch ‘Lovesick’ for free once it starts streaming?
Nope. Since Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial anymore, you’ll need an active subscription to watch “Lovesick” once it arrives. The cheapest plan starts at $9 per month with ads, while the ad-free plans cost $20 per month and $27 per month.
Netflix
Netflix is a leading subscription-based video streaming service that offers on-demand access to an extensive library of over 3,000 movies, 2,000+ TV shows, and a growing collection of acclaimed Netflix originals. Renowned for producing groundbreaking content, Netflix has become a cultural powerhouse with hit originals like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” “Squid Game,” “The Crown,” “Tiger King,” “Bridgerton,” “The Witcher,” and “Black Mirror.”
What is ‘Lovesick’ about?
“Lovesick” follows Annika, a respected breast cancer surgeon who’s suddenly forced to face the disease when she’s diagnosed with it herself. She’s built her life around helping other people through terrifying diagnoses, but now she’s the patient. That’s a great, painful setup right away because Annika knows too much. She understands the science, the risks, the treatments, and probably every way this could go wrong. There’s no hiding from the reality of it.
At the same time, Annika’s life becomes tangled with Nate, a promising politician who comes to her as a new patient. The series follows how their lives connect while Annika is going through breast cancer treatment herself. From the sound of it, this isn’t just a medical drama or a romance. It’s about love, sex, illness, family, children, death, medicine, faith, science, middle age, and all the giant questions people try not to think about until life forces them to.
Who stars in ‘Lovesick’?
Claire Danes is the only confirmed cast member so far. She plays Annika, the breast cancer surgeon at the center of the story. Danes is best known for “Homeland,” where she played Carrie Mathison across eight seasons, and she also stars in Netflix’s mystery thriller “The Beast in Me.”
Who is making ‘Lovesick’?
“Lovesick” is created, written, and executive produced by Sarah Treem, who co-created and served as showrunner on “The Affair.” That matters because “The Affair” was all about memory, desire, betrayal, marriage, family, and the different ways people tell themselves the story of their own lives. So yeah, she’s pretty clearly in her lane here. Treem has said she’s wanted to work with Danes for a long time, and that Annika feels like a character pulled from both of their “wildest dreams,” which is a pretty strong creative endorsement.
“Lovesick” is adapted from an Israeli Keshet original created by Rona Tamir, Tal Granit, and Sharon Maymon for Keshet 12.
