Kevin James and Alan Ritchson team up for explosions and dad jokes in ‘Playdate’
Prime Video’s new action comedy follows two suburban dads whose ordinary playdate turns into a fight for survival.
I’ve been loving Prime Video’s action comedies. Between “The Fall Guy,” “Heads of State,” and “Deep Cover,” I’m so happy at least one streamer is regularly producing big, funny action-packed stories. And now there’s another one to add to the list. “Playdate” stars Kevin James and Alan Ritchson as two suburban dads who find themselves hunted by mercenaries after what was supposed to be a normal afternoon playdate. You can stream “Playdate” starting Wednesday, Nov. 12, only on Prime Video.

Everything you need to know about ‘Playdate’
What time will the movie ‘Playdate’ become available?
“Playdate” premieres globally on Wednesday, Nov. 12, on Prime Video. While Amazon hasn’t confirmed the exact time, most of its new movies tend to drop around 3 a.m. ET. If you’re up late Tuesday night, it’ll likely be ready to stream.
Can you watch ‘Playdate’ for free?
Yes, if you’ve never had Prime before. Prime Video offers a 30-day free trial for new users, so you can stream “Playdate” totally free and check out everything else the platform offers. That includes tons of original series, exclusive films, and other blockbuster releases like the ones I mentioned above. After the trial, you can keep your subscription going month to month.
Why do we recommend Prime Video for watching ‘Playdate’?
Prime Video is the exclusive home for “Playdate,” so it’s the only place to stream it. A standalone Prime Video subscription costs $9 per month for the ad-supported tier or $12 per month for ad-free streaming. You can also get it included with a full Amazon Prime membership for $15 per month (this is what my wife and I do), which gives you access to shopping perks and other benefits. Prime Video has quietly become one of the best places for sharp, funny, big-budget action movies, and “Playdate” fits right in.
Prime Video
Prime Video is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 10,000+ movies, TV shows, and Prime Originals like “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” “Jack Ryan,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Boys,” and more. Subscribers can also add third-party services like Max, Showtime, STARZ, and dozens more with Prime Video Channels. Prime Video also offers exclusive live access to NFL Thursday Night Football.
What is ‘Playdate’ about?
“Playdate” follows Brian (Kevin James), a recently unemployed accountant who becomes a stay-at-home dad to his stepson. When he agrees to a casual playdate with Jeff (Alan Ritchson), a fellow stay-at-home dad with a mysterious edge, things spiral fast. What starts as tossing a football in the yard becomes a fight for survival when a crew of armed mercenaries shows up and starts chasing them across the suburbs.
Directed by Luke Greenfield (“Let’s Be Cops”) and written by Neil Goldman (“Scrubs,” “Community”), the movie should be fast, funny, and filled with wild twists. But underneath all the chaos is a story about two dads figuring out what it means to be good fathers, even when everything’s blowing up around them.

What other movies can you watch on Prime Video?
If “Playdate” gets you in the mood for more smart action comedies, Prime Video has a few of the best around. “The Fall Guy” is a meta stunt-filled thrill ride starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt that’s equal parts hilarious and heartfelt. “Heads of State” brings together Idris Elba and John Cena for a buddy-action comedy packed with explosions, bad decisions, and great chemistry. And “Deep Cover” leans into the undercover chaos, mixing improv comedy with some surprisingly tense moments.
All three deliver the kind of fun, high-energy storytelling that’s made Prime Video one of my favorite places for new movies. You can stream them all with a Prime Video subscription starting at $9 per month.
