About President Biden’s Address to the Nation
President Biden began this election cycle with every intention of seeking reelection and started in a fairly strong position against challenger and former President Donald Trump. But a disastrous performance at the first debate between the two in late June spelled the beginning of the end for Biden, who faced a chorus of calls to drop out of the race, including from top Democratic donors who began withholding campaign donations to make their point.
Biden initially pushed back against these calls but reversed course on Sunday when he released a statement to social media dropping out of the race. He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who is all but assured to be the party’s nominee when the 2024 Democratic National Convention chooses the party’s standard-bearer on Aug. 7. Wednesday’s remarks will be the first time Biden — who was also recovering from a bout of COVID-19 — has addressed the public since leaving the race.
