Everything you need to know about the ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ movie adaptation

Sally Field leads the story, which just wrapped filming and is now deep in post.

With a background in film and branded content, he covers sports and entertainment with sharp insight and creativity. A longtime Oilers fan, he’s still holding out hope for a Stanley Cup run.

There aren’t a lot of book-to-film adaptations with as much built-in charm as “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” The novel sat on the bestseller list for more than 64 weeks, and since my wife and I always have time for Sally Field, once we heard Netflix announced she’d be starring in this, we were in. Production has already wrapped, the cast is great, and the story has that warm, slightly magical vibe that hits you right in the feels. It’s got a grieving widow, a remarkably bright octopus, and a mystery that quietly builds until everything clicks. You can watch the movie this Mother’s Day Weekend with a [subscription to Netflix $].

What is ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ about?

“Remarkably Bright Creatures” is about Tova, an older widow who works at an aquarium during the late shift. She’s lonely, hurting, and just doing her best to keep going. One night, she ends up forming this unusual connection with Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus who is basically the grumpiest genius in the building. What Tova doesn’t realize is that Marcellus is way sharper than anyone knows and has his own agenda. He sees things. He puts things together. And he’s trying to solve a mystery that’s been sitting in Tova’s shadow for years.

The story in the book blends grief, humor, and a little bit of quiet magic in a way that sneaks up on you. It’s gentle without dragging and emotional without feeling heavy. And Marcellus, at least on the page, has this sharp, funny voice that makes the whole thing feel fresh. If the movie sticks close to that energy, it’ll have the same mix of warmth, mystery, and that unexpected spark the book is known for.

Who stars in ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’?

Sally Field leads the way as Tova, which really does feel like the right match. She can shift from funny to vulnerable in a heartbeat, and this role leans on all of that. Lewis Pullman is also in the film, and multiple reports suggest he’s playing a character named Cameron. The cast includes Colm Meaney, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant, and Sofia Black D’Elia, plus Meghan Heffern as a younger version of Tova and Laura Harris in the role of Andie. Netflix hasn’t revealed every character yet, but Field is clearly the emotional anchor of “Remarkably Bright Creatures.”

Who is behind ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’?

The movie is directed by Olivia Newman, who made “Where the Crawdads Sing.” She also co-wrote the script with John Whittington. Maybe most importantly, the author herself, Shelby Van Pelt, is on board as an executive producer, so here’s hoping she can help everyone nail the tone.

Is ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ based on a book?

Yep. It’s based on Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel “Remarkably Bright Creatures,” which stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for more than 64 weeks. The book blew up because it mixes mystery, healing, and the surprisingly funny voice of Marcellus, who sees humans with a kind of blunt honesty that’s both sweet and a little savage. Van Pelt is also an executive producer on the movie, so the adaptation should feel true to what readers loved.
