When does ‘Scarpetta’ come out?
“Scarpetta” premieres Wednesday, March 11 at 3:01 a.m. ET on Prime Video. The first season will include eight episodes, but it’s not clear if they’ll drop weekly or all at once, so we’ll have to wait to find out. Prime Video has done both in the past with their original series.
Can you watch ‘Scarpetta’ for free?
Yes, you can watch for free with some caveats. Prime Video still offers a 30-day free trial for eligible new users, so if that’s still available and you’re eligible when “Scarpetta” drops, you should be able to watch without paying. After that, a Prime Video subscription costs $9 per month with ads or $12 per month ad-free. I get Prime Video through my annual Amazon Prime subscription, which is another good way to get the service.

What is ‘Scarpetta’ about?
“Scarpetta” is based on Patricia Cornwell’s massively popular Kay Scarpetta novels and follows Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a legendary forensic pathologist who has spent her life speaking for the dead. The story unfolds across two timelines, jumping between Kay’s early career in the late 1990s and her present-day return to her hometown, where she steps back into her old role as Chief Medical Examiner while investigating a brutal new murder.
As the case deepens, so does the emotional fallout. Old grudges reappear, personal and professional relationships get tested, and a case from nearly three decades ago threatens to unravel everything Kay has built. This isn’t just about solving crimes. It’s about what a lifetime of chasing truth does to you, and whether justice is still worth the cost when it starts coming for your own life.
Who stars in ‘Scarpetta’?
Nicole Kidman stars as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, bringing her trademark calm intensity to a character who’s all precision and buried emotion. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Kay’s sister, Dorothy Farinelli, and their relationship is very much one of the emotional engines of the show. The cast around them is stacked, too. Bobby Cannavale plays Detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker shows up as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Ariana DeBose plays Kay’s tech-savvy niece Lucy Watson.
The dual-timeline structure also brings in Rosy McEwen, Amanda Righetti, Jake Cannavale, and Hunter Parrish as younger versions of the core characters.

Who is making ‘Scarpetta’?
The series is developed and written by Liz Sarnoff, who also serves as showrunner. If that name rings a bell, she’s worked on shows like “Barry” and “Lost,” which explains a lot about the psychological angle here. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Television, with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis both executive producing through their respective companies.
