‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ is the live-action reboot going all the way back
For the first time in franchise history, Scooby will be played by a real Great Dane.
“Scooby-Doo” has been around forever. Literal generations of kids have watched this dog, and these four teens pull rubber masks off fake monsters. And now, the famous franchise is getting a full live-action origin story. Netflix’s “Scooby-Doo: Origins” is going all the way back to the beginning, where Shaggy, Daphne, Velma, and Fred get pulled into a case involving a lost Great Dane puppy, a possible supernatural murder, and a whole lot more they’re not remotely prepared for. Production has officially wrapped on the show, Scooby is being played by a real dog (I don’t know how I feel about this…), and the series is coming sometime in 2027. Here’s everything you need to know about “Scooby-Doo: Origins.”
Everything you need to know about ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’
When does ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ come out?
Netflix has only confirmed that “Scooby-Doo: Origins” has officially finished production and that it’ll drop sometime in 2027. When next year remains to be seen, but I would guess later in the year, probably within a few months of Halloween to capture those spooky vibes.
Can you watch ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ for free once it starts streaming?
Maybe but probably not. Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial in the U.S. right now. That could change, though, by the time “Scooby-Doo: Origins” premieres, because Netflix is currently testing free trials in other territories. Here’s hoping a free trial lands here at some point and you can watch this one for free. If not, Netflix starts at $9 per month for the ad-supported tier (that’s what I have), or you can upgrade and go ad-free for $20 per month.

Netflix is a leading subscription-based video streaming service that offers on-demand access to an extensive library of over 3,000 movies, 2,000+ TV shows, and a growing collection of acclaimed Netflix originals. Renowned for producing groundbreaking content, Netflix has become a cultural powerhouse with hit originals like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” “Squid Game,” “The Crown,” “Tiger King,” “Bridgerton,” “The Witcher,” and “Black Mirror.”
What is ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’ about?
“Scooby-Doo: Origins” goes back to the final summer Shaggy and Daphne spend at camp, where the two old friends get sucked into a mystery involving a lonely Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder. Which is… not exactly how I pictured Scooby and Shaggy meeting, but what the heck, let’s see what happens.
They eventually cross paths with Velma, who approaches everything scientifically, and Freddy, the handsome new kid in town who Netflix describes as “strange” — I’m curious what exactly that means. From there, things apparently get very creepy. Also, Scooby is being played by a real Great Dane for the first time in franchise history. I genuinely have no idea whether that’s going to be adorable or I’ll be wishing they used CGI so I don’t have to worry about the real dog!
Who stars in ‘Scooby-Doo: Origins’?
The Mystery Inc. crew is official. Mckenna Grace plays Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen is Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson plays Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins is Fred Jones. The supporting cast has some names too, including Paul Walter Hauser, André Benjamin, Cathy Moriarty, Sara Gilbert, and Bruce McGill. Netflix isn’t saying who most of them are playing yet, but just assume many of them will be seriously suspicious.
