Here’s everything you need to know about the “13 Going on 30” reboot on Netflix.

It’s happening! Netflix is rebooting “13 Going On 30,” which means one of the most beloved rom-coms of the 2000s is officially getting a new life. I love the original movie — I’ve seen it at least three times, and I even rewatched it recently because Tara and I are writing a body-swap movie right now. It’s funny, weirdly sweet, and honestly one of the best body-swap movies ever made, which is exactly why it landed at No. 2 on my list of the best body swap movies on streaming. So yeah, I’m super curious to see how Netflix handles this reboot and whether it can capture even a little of the original’s magic. Here’s everything you need to know about the “13 Going on 30” reboot.

Everything you need to know about ‘13 Going on 30’

When does the ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot come out?

The short answer is we don’t know yet. Netflix hasn’t announced an official release date for the “13 Going on 30” reboot, and there’s no production start date out there yet either. Right now, this is still one of those projects that feels very early, even though some big names are already attached.

Can you watch the ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot for free once it starts streaming?

Probably not for free, as Netflix doesn’t offer a standard free trial, so you’ll almost certainly need a paid subscription to watch the movie when it drops. Right now, Netflix plans start at $9 per month with ads, $20 per month for Standard, and $27 per month for Premium. Tara and I have the $9 per month plan because we don’t mind the ads.

Netflix

Netflix is a leading subscription-based video streaming service that offers on-demand access to an extensive library of over 3,000 movies, 2,000+ TV shows, and a growing collection of acclaimed Netflix originals. Renowned for producing groundbreaking content, Netflix has become a cultural powerhouse with hit originals like “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday,” “Squid Game,” “The Crown,” “Tiger King,” “Bridgerton,” “The Witcher,” and “Black Mirror.”

…

The platform constantly updates its catalog, introducing fresh content alongside timeless classics and international hits. Netflix’s commitment to storytelling has also earned critical acclaim, with award-winning exclusives such as “Roma,” “Marriage Story,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Mank,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” In 2023, their animated film “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, further solidifying Netflix’s reputation for high-quality content.

Recently, Netflix has expanded beyond standard movies and TV titles with the addition of video podcasts, and is also exploring a digital store that would offer third-party streamers within the app.

Netflix offers three plans – stream on 2 devices in HD with the “Standard with Ads” ($8.99) plan, on 2 devices in HD with the “Standard” ($19.99) plan, and 4 devices in up to 4K on the “Premium” ($26.99) plan.

What is the ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot about?

That part is still mostly under wraps. Netflix hasn’t released an official logline yet, so plot specifics are being kept quiet for now. What we do know is that Brett Haley has described the project as a reimagining of the original movie, which suggests it probably won’t be a beat-for-beat redo.

The 2004 film follows Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who makes a wish to be “thirty, flirty, and thriving” and wakes up as her 30-year-old self in New York City. That version of the story mixed wish fulfillment, rom-com energy, and a surprisingly sharp little identity crisis as Jenna realizes that growing up into the person she dreamed of becoming isn’t quite as glamorous as she imagined. So the big question with this new version is how much of that setup stays the same, and how much gets updated.

Who stars in the ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot?

Emily Bader and Logan Lerman are set to lead the movie. Bader has been building some nice momentum lately, especially with “People We Meet on Vacation,” and Logan Lerman is one of those actors who always makes a project instantly more interesting to me. No other cast members have been announced yet, so right now they’re the two big names out front.

Who is making the ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot?

This is where things get really interesting. Brett Haley is directing the movie, which also reunites him with Emily Bader after “People We Meet on Vacation.” The script is by Hannah Marks, with revisions by Flora Greeson. And yes, Jennifer Garner is involved, which feels huge. She’s executive producing the reboot, and that at least gives this whole thing a real connection to what made the original so special.

How is the ‘13 Going on 30’ reboot connected to the original movie?

The clearest connection is Jennifer Garner. She starred as adult Jenna Rink in the original “13 Going On 30,” and now she’s coming back as an executive producer on the reboot. That doesn’t mean the new movie is a continuation of the same story, though. Everything we’ve heard so far points to this being a new take on the original concept rather than a direct follow-up.
