Jason Clarke hunts escaped convicts in Alaska in ‘The Last Frontier’

Fifty inmates are on the loose — and one worn-down U.S. Marshal has to track them all.

With a background in film and branded content, he covers sports and entertainment with sharp insight and creativity. A longtime Oilers fan, he’s still holding out hope for a Stanley Cup run.

Jason Clarke is in full old-school action mode in “The Last Frontier,” a new Apple TV+ thriller premiering on Friday, Oct. 10 at 12:01 a.m. ET. Set in the icy backwoods of Alaska, Clarke plays Frank Remnick, a small-town U.S. Marshal just days away from retirement, when a prison transport goes down and sets a bunch of dangerous inmates loose into the wild. What follows is a tense mix of manhunt, government secrets, and survival in brutal terrain. You can watch the new action series with a seven-day free trial of Apple TV+.

Why do we recommend Apple TV+ for watching ‘The Last Frontier’?

Easy. Because Apple TV+ is the only place you can stream “The Last Frontier.” Since it’s an exclusive, you’ll need a subscription to keep up with the action as new episodes drop each week. A membership costs $13 per month, comes with no ads, and supports streaming on up to six devices at once. You can also download episodes to watch offline, which comes in handy if you’re heading off the grid, just like some of the characters in the show.

Apple TV

Apple TV (formerly known as Apple TV+) is a subscription video streaming service for $14.99 per month, offering a growing slate of original series, films, documentaries, and specials. Unlike other platforms that combine licensed titles with originals, Apple TV is built entirely around exclusive programming, making it the home of critically acclaimed hits such as “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” and “Silo.” Its lineup continues to expand with award-winning dramas, comedies, family-friendly shows, and blockbuster original films like “CODA,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

…

In October 2025, Apple TV agreed to a deal with Formula 1 to exclusively broadcast all Formula 1 races starting with the 2026 season.

Apple TV also features coverage of all regular-season matches for Major League Soccer (MLS) at no additional cost.

On August 28th, 2026, the price of Apple TV was increased from $12.99 per month to $14.99 per month, the second increase in as many years.

The service is available worldwide through the Apple TV app, which is built into Apple devices and supported on most smart TVs, streaming players like Roku and Fire TV, game consoles, and web browsers. Subscribers can watch on demand, download episodes and movies for offline viewing, and stream in 4K with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, where available. Apple TV also offers family sharing, allowing up to six people to use one subscription at no extra cost.

With a competitive monthly price and bundles available through Apple One — which combines Apple TV with Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud storage, and more — the service continues to grow as a key part of Apple’s ecosystem. Apple TV delivers one of the strongest collections of exclusive content in the streaming space for viewers seeking prestige originals, cinematic storytelling, and seamless access across devices.

What is ‘The Last Frontier’ about?

“The Last Frontier” kicks off with a prison transport plane crashing in the middle of nowhere Alaska, and it only gets messier from there. Jason Clarke plays Frank Remnick, the only U.S. Marshal for miles, who’s suddenly responsible for tracking down dozens of escaped convicts in brutal wilderness. He’s days away from retirement, completely unprepared for what’s coming, and still grieving some messy history of his own. What starts as a manhunt slowly unravels into something way bigger, with the CIA getting involved and secrets buried in the snow starting to surface.

This is a full-blown ’90s-style thriller with modern-day stakes. The action’s non-stop, but it’s got layers too… questions about loyalty, power, and what it means to protect a community that doesn’t always have your back. Frank’s not your typical hero, either. He’s flawed, worn down, and trying to hold it together while the whole town teeters on chaos. And with characters like Sidney (Haley Bennett), a disgraced CIA agent chasing one specific prisoner, the tension ramps up fast. There’s a lot more going on here than just a crash, and I bet that by the time you figure out what it is, you’re already hooked.

Who stars in ‘The Last Frontier’?

Jason Clarke leads the charge in “The Last Frontier,” playing Frank Remnick: a nearly-retired U.S. Marshal who gets pulled into the mess of a lifetime when a prison transport crashes near his quiet Alaskan town. Clarke’s not just the star, as he’s also one of the executive producers behind the series.

He’s joined by a solid ensemble: Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, and Tait Blum all show up in key roles. And yes, Alfre Woodard’s in the mix too, which always means things are about to get real. But at the end of the day, this one’s Clarke’s show. He’s front and center as everything spirals out of control, carrying the weight of the action, the mystery, and the emotional fallout that comes with it.

Is ‘The Last Frontier’ based on a true story?

Nope. “The Last Frontier” isn’t pulled from real headlines. Instead, it’s built to be fun. Co-creator Jon Bokenkamp wanted to tap into the energy of ‘90s action thrillers: big stakes, wild setups, and heroes pushed to the edge. It’s totally fictional, but the setting, characters, and chaos all feel grounded enough that you could believe something like this could happen. There’s no real U.S. Marshal who tracked a bunch of escaped convicts across the Alaskan wilderness… but after watching the first episode, you might wish there was.

Will there be a Season 2 of ‘The Last Frontier’?

Right now, there’s no official word on whether “The Last Frontier” will return for a second season. The first run is 10 episodes and seems built to tell a full, self-contained story but Apple TV+ hasn’t said if that’s the end of the road. If it becomes a breakout hit, there’s always a chance they’ll find more story to tell. But as it stands, it’s a wait-and-see situation for Season 2.
