Emilia Jones leads Netflix’s disturbing new medical drama
‘The Retrievals’ comes from ‘Maid’ creator Molly Smith Metzler and tells the story of women who fought back after a shocking fertility clinic scandal.
I’m always fascinated by medical horror stories — I could not tear my eyes away from “Dr. Death” even though I wanted to. And now Netflix has plans for a fertility drama of its own in the form of “The Retrievals.” Based on Susan Burton’s New York Times and Serial Productions podcast, the series tells the story of a fertility clinic scandal where a group of women at the Yale Fertility Center underwent very painful egg retrieval procedures without any anesthesia because a nurse who worked there stole the fentanyl. There’s no word on a release date yet, but here’s what you need to know about “The Retrievals” coming to Netflix.
Everything you need to know about ‘The Retrievals’
When does ‘The Retrievals’ come out?
There’s no release date yet for “The Retrievals” because the series was just announced along with the lead actor. Assuming it shoots this year, I’d predict a 2027 release, though that’s not confirmed.
Can you watch ‘The Retrievals’ for free once it starts streaming?
No, you probably can’t watch “The Retrievals” for free when it comes out because Netflix doesn’t currently offer a free trial. The cheapest plan starts at $9 per month with ads, while the ad-free plans cost $20 per month and $27 per month. Still, make sure you look before you sign up because Netflix may have started offering free trials in other territories, and it’s possible that could extend to the U.S.

What is ‘The Retrievals’ about?
“The Retrievals” follows Gabby Clemente, a New Haven bartender and student teacher who suffers through extreme pain during an egg retrieval at the Yale Fertility Center without anesthesia. She starts digging and finds out why she didn’t get any pain drugs: a nurse at the clinic has been stealing huge amounts of fentanyl. Gabby then starts to find the other women who suffered during their own retrievals just like she did, and they team up to push back against one of the most influential institutions in the country.
This doesn’t sound like a straight-up medical drama, though. Netflix has dropped hints that the show’s tone will be a little lighter than that, finding the humor in the horror. And sometimes, humor is the only way to face the darkest times of our lives. Considering the source material, I think this is a great choice.
Who stars in ‘The Retrievals’?
The only confirmed cast member we have so far is Emilia Jones, who will play Gabby Clemente. She starred in the critically acclaimed film “Coda” and more recently appeared in “Task” on HBO Max. As soon as new cast members get announced, we’ll update this section.
Who is making ‘The Retrievals’?
“The Retrievals” is written and executive produced by Molly Smith Metzler, the Emmy-nominated creator behind “Maid” and “Sirens.” The series is adapted from Susan Burton’s Peabody Award-winning New York Times and Serial Productions podcast. Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie executive produce for LuckyChap, alongside Colin McKenna, Caitlin Roper of The New York Times, and Burton herself.
