What is ‘Young Sherlock’ about?
“Young Sherlock” is an origin story for Sherlock Holmes, set long before he becomes the brilliant detective we all know. This version of Sherlock is young, disgraced, and completely unpolished. He’s raw, impulsive, and still figuring out who he is when he gets wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his freedom.
Set primarily in 1870s Oxford, the series kicks off with Sherlock’s very first major case, which quickly spirals into something much bigger. What starts as a single mystery turns into a globe-trotting conspiracy that changes the course of his life. Along the way, we see the early instincts, mistakes, and anarchic energy of a teenager who hasn’t yet learned how to channel his brilliance. This is Sherlock before the rules, before the restraint, and before the legend. It’s messy, explosive, and clearly built to show how this kid eventually becomes Baker Street’s most famous resident.
Who stars in ‘Young Sherlock’?
Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as a young Sherlock Holmes, stepping into the role at a point where the character is still forming. The supporting cast is stacked, too. Dónal Finn, Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Colin Firth all appear across the season, which is a pretty strong signal that Prime Video is treating this like a serious, long-term play and not just a one-off experiment.
How much does ‘Young Sherlock’ take from the books?
Based on what’s been released about the show so far, “Young Sherlock” isn’t adapting a specific Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story so much as it’s using the character as a jumping-off point. The series is described as an “explosive re-imagining” of Sherlock’s early days, with Sherlock shown as a disgraced young man in 1870s Oxford who gets pulled into his first major case, which then spirals into a globe-trotting conspiracy. That whole setup is new territory, because the original stories mostly drop us in once Sherlock is already Sherlock, fully formed, already operating out of Baker Street. So the DNA it’s taking from the books is the core idea of the character and his world, then building an original origin story around that, with Guy Ritchie’s style and energy guiding the vibe.
Who is making ‘Young Sherlock’?
Guy Ritchie directs the first two episodes and executive produces the series, which explains a lot about the tone right away. Expect it to be fast, stylish, a little irreverent, and very comfortable mixing action with character.
