Hulu + Live TV should add Disney+’s Streams to its channel guide
Hulu + Live TV should add Disney+’s Streams to its channel guide
The move would help continue the integration of the streamers, and boost engagement.
The current year will be one of major change for Hulu. The standalone Hulu app will be shut down in 2026, and its content moved to the Disney+ app. Hulu will continue to exist as a standalone subscription option, as will its live TV streaming counterpart Hulu + Live TV.
It’s not totally clear where Hulu + Live TV will live once the Hulu app is sunset. It could be moved to the Disney+ app as well, or it could be housed in the Fubo app, since the two streamers completed a merger in late 2025. Either way, Hulu + Live TV should borrow a feature from Disney+ as it settles into its new home: the continuous playlists called Streams that launched on the Disney+ app in 2024.
Streams were first launched on Disney+ in 2024. They work a lot like free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels, offering a continuous stream of episodes and movies, but without the commercials. Some are built around themes and seasonal events like Halloween, while others focus on a single show; in November, Disney+ added a new “Simpsons” Stream, for example.
Streams are actually my favorite feature of the Disney+ app, because they allow the viewer to sit back and watch something they already know they’ll like, without having to go through the FOMO of picking their next stream for themselves. Since they operate so much like linear TV channels already, they would make a natural addition to the Hulu + Live TV electronic programming guide.
It’s likely that nearly 100% of Hulu + Live TV subscribers are already Disney+ customers, as well, so it’s not as if Disney would be giving access to Streams to a big pool of non-subscribers. Hulu + Live TV offers Disney+ and ESPN Unlimited for just $1 per month more than the package without those services costs, which is a no-brainer for most when subscribing to the service.
The trick is that currently, Streams are only available to Disney+ subscribers on ad-free plans. The $90-per-month Hulu + Live TV bundle includes Disney+’s ad-supported subscription, so adding Streams to the Hulu + Live TV programming guide would be something of a concession on Disney’s part, in that it would allow viewers not paying for ad-free content to watch at least some commercial-free video anyway.
But there are two solutions to this: one, to simply accept it and acknowledge that Hulu + Live TV subscribers who are paying nearly $100 per month for a channel package can have this small bonus at no extra charge without bankrupting Disney; or to simply put ads into Streams and make them available to more subscribers. It’s somewhat surprising that Disney+ hasn’t done this already, as it would give the service a way to boost ad revenues even further.
Perhaps there are technical reasons behind the decision to keep Streams strictly ad-free, perhaps not. Either way, putting them into the Hulu + Live TV programming guide would help Disney cross-promote its top brands and give viewers more access to some of the most popular Disney+ content without forcing them to click around and select a specific TV show or movie. Less browsing through the app and more time watching equals more engagement, which is something every streamer is on the hunt for.
Adding Disney+ Streams to the Hulu + Live TV channel guide would be good for the streamer and good for subscribers. There’s no reason not to do it, especially as Disney prepares to shut down the standalone Hulu app later in 2026.
