Is DIRECTV preparing to launch two new Genre Packs?
Eagle-eyed users have spotted listings for a MyKids and MyLocals Genre Pack, indicating DIRECTV could be about to expand its selection of mini-channel packages.
The DIRECTV Genre Pack could be the future of live TV streaming. These smaller channel packages built around a single theme are helping customers to watch the programming they want to see, without having to pay for channels that they’ll never watch. DIRECTV currently offers Genre Packs centering on sports, news, entertainment, and Spanish-language programming, but some eagle-eyed browsers have uncovered new possible options for future permutations of these plans.
Key Details:
- MyKids and MyLocals: Packages focused on kids programming and local broadcast channels could be coming to DIRECTV next.
- CBS included?: No DIRECTV Genre Pack so far includes the Eye Network, but MyLocals could change that.
- What about streaming? The MyKids pack could logically include a bonus subscription to Disney+.

In a post on Reddit, users have found that DIRECTV metadata includes mentions of a MyLocals Genre Pack, which users can find for themselves with a Google search, though nothing specific comes up on the company’s website just yet. Mention of a MyKids package with eight channels can also be found, according to this thread. Another searcher found that they could see a MyLocals option when searching for plans that included the channel MeTV on the DIRECTV website.
So, is DIRECTV planning to boost the inventory of Genre Packs it offers? It’s not a sure thing yet, but it appears that the ground is indeed being prepped for these additions. The Streamable has reached out to DIRECTV regarding this new information, and will update this article if/when we get a response. It is worth pointing out that when DIRECTV first got the green light to create these smaller packages, the channel distributor specifically mentioned that it planned to build one around kids and family programming.
In the meantime, we can do a little speculating on what might be included in these packages if they do launch, and how much they might cost. Let’s start with the MyLocals option.
Predicted channels in DIRECTV’s MyLocals Pack:
I imagine that DIRECTV would like to get CBS into the package, but that’s not a sure thing. The Paramount-owned broadcast network is not currently included in any of the other Genre Packs available from the company, while ABC, Fox, and NBC are. Given the fragile state of Paramount Global’s current ownership, it might not be easy for CBS to sign off on a new deal to allow its inclusion.
Similarly, many cord-cutters might like to have over-the-air channel The CW in their local channels genre pack, but DIRECTV hasn’t included the channel in any of its genre packs just yet. However, considering that the network is available in all of DIRECTV’s Signature Packages, it seems just as likely - - if not even more so — that The CW will appear in this pack.
The cost of MyLocals would probably come in around $40 per month, maybe even more. That might seem high, but retransmission fees for local broadcast channels can get pretty high, which is why so many old-school cablers — and even live TV streaming services like Sling TV — carry an extra fee for including these networks in their channel plans. Turning to the MyKids package, I could see it coming in at $25 per month or thereabouts.
Predicted channels in DIRECTV’s MyKids Pack:
The real intrigue to this plan is whether or not it will include a streaming subscription in the price, as the MyEntertainment and MySports packages do. Adding a Disney+ subscription to this plan would make quite a bit of sense. The MyEntertainment Pack includes the Disney Bundle of both Disney+ and Hulu, while the MySports version comes with ESPN+. It would seem to make sense to include Disney+ in this potential pack given the number of Disney-owned channels in my proposed lineup.
Nonetheless, it seems likely that DIRECTV is preparing to launch a couple of new channel packs, though we don’t have official confirmation from the company yet. Would you be likely to sign up for either of these DIRECTV Genre Packs? Let us know in the comments!
