Disney streamers’ churn rate doubled during Jimmy Kimmel absence
The brief hiatus of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ continues to prove to be a costly one for Disney.
As more data becomes available, the clearer it becomes that Disney suffered a great deal from its decision to pull “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” off the air in the wake of Kimmel’s comments following the murder of Charlie Kirk. Free speech advocates the world over. Kimmel was soon restored to the airwaves, but new data from Antenna has more information on just how badly Disney suffered from its decision to remove him in the first place.
Key Details:
- Not good numbers: Cancelation rates for both Disney+ and Hulu doubled during Kimmel’s suspension.
- Quantifiable data: Reports indicate Disney lost nearly 2 million streaming subscribers while Kimmel was off the air.
- Rough couple of months: A price increase in October could continue the exodus of viewers from Disney streamers.

New data from Antenna adds even more context to the fact that Disney saw a large cancel reaction from customers after pulling “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” broadcasts from ABC on Sept. 17. Antenna’s numbers show that the churn rate for both Disney+ and Hulu doubled during Kimmel’s absence from the network.
Digging into specifics, the churn rate for Hulu jumped from 5% in August to 10% in September. For Disney+, the cancellation percentage jumped from 4% to 8% in the same time period. In total, Antenna estimates that 4.1 million viewers canceled Hulu in September, and 3 million more canceled Disney+.
The data also shows that signups for Hulu and Disney+ were higher than they were in the five previous months. Without a breakdown of when these subscriptions occurred versus when cancellations took place, however, it would be difficult to posit with any certainty that this means there was a counter-reaction to the decision to suspend Kimmel.
The data from Antenna reinforces earlier reports, which indicated that Disney+ and Hulu lost 1.7 million customers in the six days that Kimmel was off the air. Conservative viewers were outraged by Kimmel’s words in the wake of Kirk’s murder, and the Trump administration put pressure on ABC to take action.
In the same week that Disney announced Kimmel would be restored to airwaves, it announced it was raising prices for most of its streaming plans and bundles. Between that announcement and the Kimmel losses, Disney could be in for a rough few months from a subscriber standpoint, and its next quarterly earnings report will bear watching — or it would if Disney hadn’t said it was planning to stop reporting subscriber numbers for its streamers in August.
