Is ‘Nashville’ the next licensed mega-hit for Netflix?
The series will make its debut on Netflix on Sept. 15, and it could get a big surge in viewership.
The Netflix Bump is now an official phenomenon. It all started with “Suits” which became such a phenomenon with audiences that it inspired an NBC spinoff series years after the original ended its run on the USA Network. In September, Netflix will be importing another popular series from years past, the country music drama “Nashville,” which first debuted on ABC in 2012. The show was quite popular in its first run on TV, and with a new streaming home on Netflix, it may become the latest series to find renewed affection and attention on the world’s largest streamer.
Key Details:
- Fall follies: “Nashville” hits Netflix on Sept. 15.
- Another revival: The show was originally canceled in 2016, but came back for two more seasons on Country Music Television.
- Netflix effect: After “Suits,” Netflix has also helped “Prison Break” and “Blindspot” find massive audiences.
“Nashville” will roll out all six seasons (124 episodes) on Netflix on Sept. 15. The series previously streamed on Hulu, but it was removed from the streamer in July. Now, it will become available on the world’s largest streamer, presumably as part of a multi-year deal.
The series has already proven itself popular enough to get an outcry from viewers after its first cancellation. “Nashville” was given the axe by its original network ABC in 2016, but an online campaign orchestrated by viewers led to the show’s revival on Country Music Television for two additional seasons.
Could a similar groundswell of support happen on Netflix? The streamer has a habit of turning older licensed titles into massive hits; in 2023, the legal drama “Suits” rocketed to the top of Netflix charts, and performed so well that it spawned a revival series dubbed “Suits LA,” which was not received nearly as warmly.
In 2024, “Prison Break” saw a similar explosion in audience growth after arriving on Netflix. The series was streamed for 1.6 billion minutes in a single week last July, showing that the effect of becoming available on a platform with as many subscribers as Netflix can be immense for just about any program. Currently, NBC espionage drama “Blindspot” is performing extremely well on the Netflix charts.
“Nashville” could indeed be the next series destined for ratings greatness on Netflix, and might even spawn a new spinoff series if it’s popular enough. The show stars Connie Britton, Hayden Panettiere, Clare Bowen, Charles Esten, and Jonathan Jackson, and centers on the lives of country music legend superstar Rayna James and rising talent Juliette Barnes, and their lives in an industry that’s always looking for the next big thing.
