Netflix to co-produce drama series ‘Bannerman’ with AMC
The show will be released on AMC platforms as well as Netflix once production is finished.
Netflix and AMC are continuing to grow closer together. AMC has licensed some of its most popular titles to Netflix for years, and now the two are taking the next major step. AMC and Netflix have announced that they will be teaming up on a new series called “Bannerman,” based on the popular spy novel series by John R. Maxim.
Key Details:
- Coming together: AMC and Netflix are teaming up on a new series called “Bannerman.”
- Joint release: The show will come out on AMC platforms and Netflix, as well.
- Call it a career: The show follows a covert operative who convinces a group of spies to retire to the suburbs.
“Bannerman” is the first co-production between the companies, and is being written, executive produced, and showrun by Craig Silverstein. Shane Black co-wrote the first episode with Silverstein, and will direct the first two episodes.
Once the show is ready to roll, it will premiere on AMC in the United States and Canada. Ninety days after the season finale airs on AMC, the show will premiere on Netflix. The announcement did not specify whether the show would stream on AMC+ at any point in the process. Generally, all shows that air on the linear AMC cable channel are also immediately available on AMC+, but the fact that it wasn’t mentioned in initial reports or press releases does raise the question of whether or not excluding the series from the streamer is part of the deal with Netflix.
The show will follow a lethal covert operative named Paul Bannerman. He pulls a group of fellow spies and assassins into retirement in the quiet suburbs of Connecticut, but they soon find their old lives and past professional bad habits aren’t so easy to shake.
“‘Bannerman’ is a smart, high-octane thrill ride of a series, powered by an extraordinary creative team,” AMC chief content officer Dan McDermott said. “This is the perfect premium drama to kick off our first co-production with Netflix, and we are thrilled to continue evolving and expanding our partnership by jointly developing and producing select original series for our respective platforms.”
Netflix and AMC have always been close, and recently announced a new licensing deal allowing Netflix to stream even more AMC titles in the months and years to come. Is a Netflix purchase of AMC in the cards? Nothing is imminent, but considering the cozy relationship between the two — now growing cozier — it’s far from impossible that Netflix would cast an acquisitive eye on AMC in the future.
