Netflix lands ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast for 2026 World Cup
Netflix lands ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast for 2026 World Cup
The streamer isn’t offering any live World Cup games, but it will welcome one of the most-consumed soccer podcasts in the world during the tournament.
Netflix is continuing to take careful steps in the sports streaming world, but even with that care, the streamer has landed some major events. The streamer will offer every game from the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cups, which is undeniably a big win on a global scale for the streamer. Netflix did not acquire the rights to stream any games from the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, but will offer quality shoulder coverage of the tournament in the form of “The Rest is Football” podcast.
Key Details:
- Let’s ball: Netflix will offer streams of “The Rest is Football” podcast during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
- On site: The podcast will feature analysis and reporting from World Cup games, though no live action.
- Building a foundation: Netflix has made several podcast deals recently and has also brought on an on-screen sports personality.
“The Rest is Football” will stream globally on Netflix during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The show will be presented daily during the tournament, anchored from a studio in New York but with analysis and reporting from World Cup games around North America, where the tournament will be held.
The podcast is hosted by former professional soccer players Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards, who bring their expert-level analysis to every topic they discuss. “The Rest is Football” is one of the most-consumed soccer pods in the world, attracting 7 million monthly streams.
“We can’t wait to bring The Rest Is Football to Netflix for the 2026 World Cup,” Lineker said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the three of us to do what we love — talk football every day — but on a truly global stage. Expect all the usual analysis, honesty and plenty of laughs… just with a few more cameras pointed at us, all from the Big Apple.”
This is just the latest sporting move Netflix has made recently. In November, the streamer reportedly hired long-time ESPN host Elle Duncan to be its primary on-air sports personality. The streamer has also made several podcast deals in 2025, agreeing to a deal with Spotify and discussing pacts with iHeartMedia as well as SiriusXM.
Netflix won’t be streaming any live World Cup soccer games until the 2027 women’s tournament, but it’s courting fans of that sport already. Adding “The Rest is Football” podcast for next year’s World Cup is an excellent way for the streamer to build up a reputation among soccer fans ahead of 2027.
