Netflix viewers around the world report errors, outages

On Thursday evening, the world’s largest streaming service experienced massive issues around the globe.

It’s rare that any streamer suffers a widespread outage, much less the largest streamer of them all. But that’s exactly what happened to Netflix on Thursday night. Customers around the world reported not being able to watch the titles that they wanted to on Netflix, and although the service seems to be back on its feet now, the errors left thousands of customers temporarily confused and annoyed.

Key Details:

  • Reports indicate…: More than 60,000 people reported issues with Netflix on Downdetector.
  • Error!: Customers were greeted with error codes and messages that their chosen title could not be watched.
  • Not the first time: Netflix suffered widespread issues with a live stream of a boxing match in November.

Customers took to social media to express their frustration with their inability to watch Netflix on Thursday evening. The website Downdetector, which tracks user reports on streaming outages, saw a spike in customers flagging issues with Netflix on Thursday night, which reached nearly 69,000 people.

Viewers say they were confronted with error code E100 when they tried to watch a chosen title. The error code was accompanied by a message that read “This title is not available to watch instantly.” Problems began around 9:30 p.m. ET and continued for hours.

It appears that Netflix is back on track now, with viewing ability restored to most — if not all — titles. If you are trying to watch Netflix and are still seeing an error code or some kind of other problem, sound off about the difficulties in our comments section.

This isn’t the first time in recent history that Netflix has had major problems around the world. In November, the streamer tried to air a promotional boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, only to see thousands of viewers around the world be unable to watch. But this is the first time in recent memory that Netflix has had problems streaming on-demand content on such a large scale.

With the global nature of streaming services and the heavy demand on their servers, it’s something of a wonder that these problems don’t occur more frequently. Nevertheless, viewers were left feeling very annoyed with Netflix when the issues began, and audiences are no doubt relieved to see it back on track.
