Netflix moves ahead with ‘Heartstopper’ movie to wrap series

Netflix moves ahead with ‘Heartstopper’ movie to wrap series

After some uncertainty about a renewal for ‘Heartstopper,’ Netflix has announced great news for fans of the series.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.
Netflix has announced it will move forward with a Heartstopper movie that will serve as the show's series finale.

“Heartstopper” can officially breathe a sigh of relief. The LGBTQIA+ teen romance series on Netflix currently has three seasons available, but there was some uncertainty as to whether or not it would get another season to wrap up its storylines. That question has been answered, as Netflix is moving ahead with a “Heartstopper” movie that will serve as the show’s finale.

Key Details:

  • Hard work rewarded: The “Heartstopper” creative team has been pushing hard to finish the series.
  • Ratings roller coaster: Season 3 of “Heartstopper” drew 30% fewer views than Season 2.
  • From page to screen: “Heartstopper” creator Alice Oseman is returning as a writer for the film.

The news that “Heartstopper” is returning with a movie instead of a fourth season is the culmination of a huge effort from the show’s creative team. In February, “Heartstopper” creator Alice Oseman said that she was “working very hard behind the scenes” to get the show renewed, and those efforts have now come to fruition.

The ratings for “Heartstopper” Season 3 left room for doubt as to whether Netflix would reward the show with another batch of episodes. It attracted 10.9 million views between its release on Oct. 3 and the end of 2024, which was down around 30% from Season 2’s viewership over the same period of time.

The movie is due to begin shooting some time in summer 2025. Oseman, who wrote the graphic novel series that the TV show is based on, is back to pen the script for the film, and was not shy about her excitement that the show will get a proper ending.

“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the ‘Heartstopper’ story,” Oseman said. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of ‘Heartstopper’ for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”

“Heartstopper” follows the story of Nick and Charlie, two inseparable lovers who face the harsh realities of a long-distance relationship in the show’s third season. The show is a tale about the ups and downs of love and friendship, and now fans can excitedly await what is sure to be a heartfelt and stirring conclusion.
