Over 50% of 2025 Netflix original TV releases were non-English
Over 50% of 2025 Netflix original TV releases were non-English
For the first time, Netflix released more non-English original titles than English ones last year.
Essentially, all other streaming services are trying to catch up with Netflix, especially in terms of global presence. Netflix is available in over 190 countries worldwide, and its huge footprint means it has to serve a wide range of appetites. Its original release calendar certainly reflects that, as new data from Ampere Analysis makes clear; in 2025, Netflix released more non-English originals than English-language ones, marking a first for the streamer.
Key Details:
- Major milestone: In 2025, 52% of Netflix original releases were non-English.
- Mixed results: Netflix original movie releases were still more than 50% English last year.
- En espanol?: Spanish was the leading non-English language for Netflix TV releases.
Per Ampere’s research, 52% of Netflix original TV releases in 2025 were non-English. That represents the largest proportion of the Netflix release calendar in the streamer’s history, and demonstrates that the number of non-English releases by the streamer has risen steadily. In 2024, the percentage of non-English original TV shows from Netflix was 49%. Fifty-six percent of Netflix’s original movie releases last year were still in English.
Zooming in on the data, Spanish remains the most popular non-English language for Netflix original shows. Twenty-one percent of original TV seasons in 2025 were Spanish, but Korean titles made impressive gains as well. In 2024, only 12% of Netflix original TV releases were Korean-language, but in 2025 that number rose to 20%, thanks to the final season of “Squid Game” and other shows.
But as some languages gained in 2025, others pulled back. Japanese titles accounted for 6% of Netflix original releases in 2024, but that number fell to 4% in 2025. The streamer is more reliant on acquired titles in Japanese; of all acquired TV seasons on Netflix in 2025, 20% were Japanese — second only to English (43%). Sixty-seven percent of acquired Japanese TV seasons on Netflix in 2025 were animated.
The data shows Netflix is highly responsive to the needs of its global audience. Viewers consistently prefer to stream titles in their native language, and Netflix recognizes the responsibility of having a major global presence by attempting to serve as much of its worldwide subscriber pool as possible.
“Crossing the 52% threshold is a meaningful milestone for Netflix. For the first time, non-English-language titles now form the majority of its Original TV releases, highlighting how global and local content strategies are no longer peripheral, but central to the platform’s growth,” Ampere principal analyst Rahul Patel said. “And when non-English-language titles travel beyond their local market and perform well internationally – such as Korean-language ‘Bon Appétit, Your Majesty,’ and German-language ‘Cassandra’ – they provide stronger returns on content investment for the global streamer.”
