Netflix, Paramount extend licesning deals for ‘Seinfeld’
The show about nothing will continue to stream on Netflix, while Paramount will retain its basic cable rights.
Breathe easy, “Seinfeld” fans. The iconic show about nothing is staying right where it is. “Seinfeld” distributor Sony Pictures Television has renewed licensing agreements with Netflix and Paramount to ensure that the series remains available on its current streaming and basic cable homes for years to come.
Key Details:
- What’s the deal?: Netflix will remain the exclusive streaming home of “Seinfeld” for the next five years.
- Bases covered: Paramount will stay the cable home of “Seinfeld” for three more years.
- Just in time: The previous “Seinfeld” licensing deals were set to expire on Oct. 1.
Sony’s new licensing deal with Netflix will allow the streamer to continue as the global subscription streaming partner of “Seinfeld” for the next five years. The show will stream exclusively on Netflix in the United States and Canada as part of the deal, but it will no longer be the exclusive streaming home of the show globally, as it was in years past.
“The show famously about nothing is in fact, everything, and we’re proud to be the streaming home of ‘Seinfeld,’ one of the greatest comedies in the history of TV,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said.
Paramount is also continuing as a partner of Sony Pictures Television for “Seinfeld.” The companies have extended their deal to air “Seinfeld” on Paramount-owned basic cable channels like Comedy Central, TV Land, and others in the U.S. for the next three years.
“As one of the most influential and enduring comedies in television history, Seinfeld continues to resonate with audiences across generations, and we’re proud that Paramount will remain its exclusive cable home,” Paramount executive George Cheeks said. “Iconic franchises like Seinfeld are foundational to our programming strategy, and this renewal reinforces our commitment to delivering fan-favorite series that audiences love.”
The original deals between Sony, Netflix, and Paramount were due to expire on Oct. 1, so these renewals came with roughly six weeks left. Per Deadline, Netflix is paying less than the estimated $500 million it paid to acquire the rights to “Seinfeld” in 2019 in its new deal with Sony. In exchange, Sony now has the ability to sell the show’s international streaming rights to another service.
