What kind of parental controls does Netflix offer?
For a streamer with a giant catalog like Netflix, parental controls are a must. We’ll show you how to set them up here.
Streaming offers great access to a multitude of content on the same app, but that can come with advantages and pitfalls. One of those potential drawbacks for families is that kids can access content that’s way beyond their age range if they’re not being monitored at all times, and it’s not really feasible to be tracking what kids are watching on top streaming services every second they’re using them.
Netflix is used by families around the globe, and is popular with all age groups. It’s got franchises that all kids love, and will even welcome “Sesame Street” starting in 2025. There’s no denying that Netflix also has a huge lineup of titles that aren’t appropriate for kids, so does it offer parental controls to keep young viewers away from content they shouldn’t see? - Add a name, and then select Kids Profile, For Kids, or Kid?, depending on your device.
On a mobile device:
- Tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.

Can you edit maturity ratings on other Netflix profiles?
Yes, you do not have to set up a kids’ profile to change what content each profile on Netflix can watch. On your device, go to the Manage Profiles section, then choose Viewing Restrictions or Parental Controls. Look for Maturity Rating, then set the rating to whatever you want to restrict that profile to watching. This is ideal for parents of teens who don’t need to be restricted to kids-only shows, but aren’t ready for the whole Netflix catalog just yet.
Can you block a specific movie or show on Netflix?
Yes, you can block specific movies and TV shows on Netflix by going back to the Viewing Restrictions page in the Manage Profiles menu. Choose Block Titles or Title Restrictions, and type the name of the show or movie you want to be locked out on that profile.
Can you set a PIN for Netflix profiles?
If you want to, you can set up a PIN that is required before adding new profiles on Netflix. This will prevent others in the home from creating non-kids profiles to watch on when unsupervised.
To set up a pin on Netflix:
- Open the streamer on your web browser.
- Go to the Account page, and click Profiles.
- Click Profile Lock, and verify your identity with your Netflix password.
- Check the box to “Require Pin” to add new profiles.
- Click save.
Can kids access account settings or games from their profiles?
No, kids are locked out from access to account settings on the Netflix app on kids profiles. In addition, none of the free Netflix games that are included with a subscription can be played on a kids’ profile with the service.
