A new Apple TV model is reportedly on the way in 2025; how different could it be?
Will it be worth it for current Apple TV owners to upgrade to a new model?
Apple doesn’t believe in standing still with its technology. The company is constantly thinking of new ways to improve its iPhones or MacBooks, and now it’s reportedly considering an upgrade to its Apple TV streaming players. Bloomberg was first with the news that Apple may be ready to launch a new model of Apple TV in 2025, one equipped with a new component that’s been under development for years.
Key Details:
- Apple has been developing a chip code-named Proxima that will combine Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capability.
- The chip will be integrated into new Apple TV devices when it’s ready to launch.
- Previous reports indicate the company was also looking to incorporate a camera into its Apple TV players.
Bloomberg says that Apple is looking to move away from component parts manufactured by Broadcom. That’s why the company has been hard at work in the development of a combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chip, which has been in the works for years under the codename Proxima. The new chip will be manufactured by partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
The Proxima chip will be integrated into Apple products starting in 2025. Bloomberg says it will be integrated into HomePod devices as well as Apple TVs, and new models of those specific devices could be headed to customers as early as next year.
Combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth could bring better overall functionality to the Apple TV device, and the chip will give the company greater end-to-end control over its devices. Bloomberg says the development of Proxima constitutes a “major breakthrough” for Apple’s hardware development team.
There have been other updates considered for the Apple TV device in recent months, as well. In April, it was reported the company was thinking about putting cameras into each Apple TV, in an effort to boost the device’s compatibility with FaceTime and turn TV screens more seamlessly into video calling platforms.
Existing Apple TV devices just got a big software update in the form of tvOS 18.1, which rolled out in late October. It made updates to the device’s Watchlist feature, among other changes.
