Breaking: New Bundle with Disney+, Hulu, and Max Coming This Summer

Starting this summer, two media giants are teaming up for the biggest streaming bundle yet. You’ll be able to subscribe to a discounted bundle that includes Disney+, Hulu, and Max. The price has not yet been announced. Subscribers can choose ad-supported or ad-free bundles.

Currently, users have the option of bundling Disney+ with Hulu and/or ESPN+. Subscribers to Hulu Live TV get all three services at a significant discount. But all of those services are owned by Disney. This new bundle brings over the Max library from Warner Bros. Discovery, a company that (until now) was a direct rival.

The two companies are joining Fox to offer a sports-focused joint venture later this year, so a team-up is not entirely unprecedented. But this bundle seems to take aim at Netflix, which doesn’t offer much by way of sports.

We will likely hear more about this plan during the Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call tomorrow morning.

Earlier today, Bloomberg reported that Max will become more expensive this year.

As the pandemic-fueled streaming boom cools, we’re seeing the first signs of consolidation. Paramount Global folded Showtime into its flagship Paramount+ streamer. The company also pulled the plug on its kid-focused streamer, Noggin. Amazon further blurred the lines between its streamers as the base tier of Prime Video was saddled with commercials while the already ad-supported Freevee content lives within the Prime Video interface.

While Max is not fully merging with the Disney services, the bundle would presumably allow viewership transparency across the bundle. It’s possible Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is hoping those numbers could entice some kind of bid from Disney. Still, it’s unlikely Disney is in a buying mood for any additional IP. The company will pay a fortune for NBA rights, it has to fork over untold billions to Comcast for the remaining Hulu ownership, and it likely overpaid when it spent $71.3 billion to acquire 21st Century Fox.

Zaslav has shown a willingness to go beyond most other media CEOs in search of money. He reversed Max’s departure from Prime Video channels, rented out A-list content to Netflix, and seems to have abandoned plans for a free streaming service to monetize the Warner Bros. library on free streamers like Tubi. It’s entirely likely Zaslav is willing to accept a lower rate in this new bundle in order to acquire the incremental audience.

“On the heels of the very successful launch of Hulu on Disney+, this new bundle with Max will offer subscribers even more choice and value,” said Joe Earley, President, Direct to Consumer, Disney Entertainment. “This incredible new partnership puts subscribers first, giving them access to blockbuster films, originals, and three massive libraries featuring the very best brands and entertainment in streaming today.”

“This new offering delivers for consumers the greatest collection of entertainment for the best value in streaming, and will help drive incremental subscribers and much stronger retention,” said JB Perrette, CEO and President, Global Streaming and Games, Warner Bros. Discovery. “Offering this unprecedented entertainment value for fans across all the complimentary genres these three services offer, presents a powerful new roadmap for the future of the industry.”
