Crunchyroll App Now Available on Samsung Smart TVs Bringing Massive Anime Library to More Viewers

Samsung’s smart TV operating system is the most popular in the United States, and now it will add thousands of anime episodes from Cruncyroll.

Heads up, Samsung smart TV owners! Your device now has a bit of extra functionality, especially for fans of Japanese animation. Samsung has announced that it will now offer the Crunchyroll app directly through its smart TV operating system for sets manufactured between 2017 and 2023, allowing viewers to find and start streaming content from Crunchyroll with incredible ease.

  • Previously, Samsung smart TV customers would have to access Crunchyroll through a dongle or other streaming device.
  • Samsung is the most popular smart TV operating system in the United States, with 35% of customers identifying it as their favorite.
  • Crunchyroll offers nearly 50,000 episodes of top anime titles like “My Hero Academia.”

Why Was Crunchyroll App Not Available on Samsung Smart TVs Before?

Crunchyroll is available on other popular streaming devices, including Apple TV, Google TV and Android TV-powered sets and dongles, as well as other players. But it has not offered a dedicated streaming app for Samsung smart TVs until now; customers had to grab an Amazon Fire TV device or a similar streaming player to watch Crunchyroll on their Samsung smart TV.

That’s because Samsung has created its own operating system for its smart TVs, instead of relying on Android TV or another third-party software creator to handle its OS. That means Crunchyroll had to create a special app that is designed to interface with Samsung, and until now the streaming service has not felt the need to do so.

It’s a good move on Cruncyroll’s part to spin up a new app for Samsung smart TVs. According to data released by Parks Associates in January, 35% of American smart TV owners identify Samsung’s Tizen OS as their favorite, which is the highest percentage of any device manufacturer. Statista reports that in 2022, Samsung laid claim to 29.7% of the global TV market, so making Crunchyroll easier for these customers to acquire could lead to a big influx of new subscribers for the streamer.

“Anime is one of the fastest-growing entertainment mediums worldwide,” said Crunchyroll Chief Product Officer Kaliel Roberts. “We’re thrilled to enhance access to Crunchyroll for Samsung’s Smart TV users. Samsung is providing a seamless experience for both dedicated anime fans and the anime-curious, allowing them to easily sign up and access their favorite anime directly on their TV screens.”

What’s Available to Stream on Crunchyroll?

Crunchyroll carries over 46,000 episodes of anime, with favorites like “My Hero Academia,” classics such as “One Piece,” and many others available. It is available in more than 200 countries worldwide, and is the global leader in anime streaming with 13 million total subscribers.

In addition to anime episodes, Crunchyroll offers 3,300 Japanese music videos and concert specials, and the latest trending shows available on Crunchyroll on-demand, all with the option of subtitles or dubs across more than 12 local languages including English, Spanish (Latin America and Spain/Castilian), Portuguese, French, German, Arabic, Italian, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil. Customers can subscribe to Crunchyroll for as little as $7.99 per month, and each tier of the service includes unlimited ad-free streaming. Now, subscribers will be able to enjoy their favorite anime directly through their Samsung smart TV.

Some of their more popular titles are Dragon Ball Super, Attack on Titan, and Fire Force.

Crunchyroll offers three plans. The “Fan” ($7.99) plan allows streaming on 1 device, but no offline viewing. Their “Mega Fan” ($11.99) plan allows viewing on 4 devices along with offline viewing. And the “Ultimate Fan” ($15.99) plan offers viewing on 6 devices, offline viewing, and an annual swag bag, among other perks.

For maximum flexibility, The Streamable recommends adding Crunchyroll as a Prime Video channel.
