Brad Pitt’s ‘Cliff Booth’ movie will head to theaters before Netflix
The streamer continues to shift its thinking on theatrical releases.
Are you ready to spend your holidays with Brad Pitt? If so, despite being produced by Netflix, it looks like you will have to head to the cinema to do so. While the world’s largest streamer is behind a forthcoming follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” which will see Pitt return to the role of Cliff Booth that earned him his first acting Oscar, it has announced that “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” will debut in theaters before arriving on Netflix a month later.
Key Details:
- Once upon a time in theaters: “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” will premiere in theaters nearly a month before hitting Netflix.
- Limited engagement: Like other Netflix films, “Cliff Booth” will get two weeks in cinemas.
- Trending up: Netflix is continuing to strengthen its ties to theaters with cinematic releases.
“The Adventures of Cliff Booth” will debut in IMAX theaters around the United States on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The film will stay in cinemas for two weeks, and then make its way to Netflix on Dec. 23. The film takes over the release slot recently vacated by Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia” film, which is also headed to theaters. Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician's Nephew” is now expected to arrive in theaters on Feb. 12, 2027, before moving to streaming on April 2.
The announcement represents another data point in Netflix’s clear shift in philosophy. The streamer once insisted that its original movies were specifically intended to be streamed at home, but it has been increasing the number of titles sent to theaters for short engagements as of late. Part of this move is to help it attract A-list talent both in front of and behind the camera. “Cliff Booth” is directed by Oscar-nominated icon David Fincher, while Gerwig is one of the most in-demand auteurs currently working in Hollywood. In order to ensure that they are willing to work with a streaming service, Netflix appears to be loosening the reins on its streaming-only strategy.
Its turnaround first started with the acquisition of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out franchise and has rapidly expanded following the success of “KPop Demon Hunters'” run in theaters last year. That, combined with Netflix executives’ close conversations with theater chain executives when the streamer was set to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery, helped to change some minds at Netflix regarding the service’s relationship with cinemas.
“The Adventures of Cliff Booth” picks up with the stuntman in 1977, eight years after the events of “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood.” Hollywood is a very different place, but Cliff is still hanging around the studio system. Fincher is directing, with the script written by Tarantino.
