Nokia, Amazon agree to patent deal for use of video tech
The deal will allow Amazon to make use of Nokia video technology in its streaming services, such as Prime video.
Judges across the globe are breathing a sign of relief on Monday, as a case featuring two big-name litigants is now being taken off the docket. Amazon and Nokia are settling an ongoing lawsuit, announcing that they have reached a patent agreement that will allow Amazon to use Nokia video technology on its streamers.
Key Details:
- Nokia alleged Amazon was using its video tech on streamers like Prime Video without permission.
- Amazon countered that Nokia was misusing its standard-essential patents.
- The agreement means that all litigation is now settled and Amazon can continue using Nokia tech.
The agreement settles a Nokia lawsuit against Amazon for allegedly using its video technology without permission on streaming services like Prime Video. Suits were first filed in 2023 in the United States, Germany, India, the United Kingdom, and the European Unified Patent Court.
In the course of the suit, Amazon countered that Nokia was misusing standard-essential patents, trying to block products from using them instead of offering fair licenses to use its technology. Nokia has pursued litigation against other big companies for improper use of its tech in recent years, including Mercedez and Lenovo.
The new deal between Amazon and Nokia puts that suit to bed. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it ends the litigation between the two in all jurisdictions.
“We are pleased to have reached agreement on the use of Nokia’s video technologies in Amazon’s streaming services and devices,” said Nokia executive Arvin Patel.
Amazon’s lawyers have been kept plenty busy thanks to lawsuits featuring Prime Video in some capacity in recent months. In 2024, the company was sued by Prime Video subscribers over the method by which the streamer introduced ads, forcing customers to either accept them or pay more to go ad-free. A judge eventually dismissed that lawsuit.
