Passionflix teams with Vigloo, shifting key series to short-form

Passionflix teams with Vigloo, shifting key series to short-form

‘The Secret Life of Amy Bensen’ will live on as a short-form series on the Vigloo platform thanks to the deal.

Short-form streaming is a new, but growing segment of the industry that takes advantage of viewing habits established by TikTok, YouTube, and similar platforms. The romance streaming service Passionflix is trying to get in on the trend. It has announced a new partnership with the short-form streaming service Vigloo that will see one of Passonflix’s original series begin streaming on a new home in a new format.

Key Details:

  • No longer secret: “The Secret Life of Amy Benson” will begin streaming as a short-form series on Vigloo.
  • All episodes: Both existing seasons of the show are debuting on the Vigloo platform.
  • Micro-drama invasion: The micro-video format has seen growth in Asia and the United States.

As announced on Monday, the micro-drama platform Vigloo has partnered with Passionflix to stream “The Secret Life of Amy Benson,” a Passionflix original series that is now licensed to a new home. Vigloo will transform the show into bite-sized episodes that they can consume via vertical scroll, just like the YouTube Shorts interface or similar platforms.

“The Secret Life of Amy Benson” has two season’s worth of episodes available; the first came out in 2022, followed by Season 2 in 2023. Originally, both seasons of the show had six episodes each, but they’ve been split into 35 short-form episodes to stream on Vigloo. They’re available to watch in eight languages on the platform.

“We’re thrilled to dive into vertical storytelling with Vigloo,” Tosca Musk, CEO of Passionflix said. “Reimagining ‘Amy Bensen’ in this way gives us the chance to introduce the series to an entirely new audience while offering longtime fans a fresh experience.”

The micro-drama genre has seen steady growth in recent months. In April, data showed that Asia’s top five micro-drama streaming apps had 150 million monthly active users, and their usage was growing in the United States as well. In July, the new short-form romance service Love Drama launched for a global audience.

Vigloo offers different pricing options. Viewers can get a weekly membership for $18, or a monthly subscription for $26, but there are essentially microtransaction options available as well. Viewers can purchase 100 coins from the Vigloo in-app platform for $1, or 500 coins for $5. The $5 option is equivalent to 10 episodes of viewing, at least for some titles on the Vigloo service.

“Romance is our top-performing genre, and ‘Amy Bensen’ delivers everything our viewers crave—passion, suspense, and emotional depth,” Neil Choi, CEO of Vigloo, said. “This partnership allows us to pioneer new ways of expanding beloved IP, while continuing to redefine how premium stories are told.”

Passionflix

Passionflix is a streaming service dedicated to movie and TV adaptations of romance novels and erotic fan fiction.

…

The streaming service offers a selection of romantic and “steamy” films, television shows, and original content. It aims to provide a more diverse and inclusive range of romantic entertainment, with a focus on celebrating and representing different cultures, identities, and relationships – pulled from adaptations of popular romance books and original stories.

Content on the service is rated on a “barometer of naughtiness.” The categories are “Oh So Vanilla,” “Mildly Titillating,” “Passion & Romance,” “Toe Curling Yumminess” and “NSFW” (Not Safe for Work). While the last two categories on the naughtiness barometer have nudity, Passionflix has a strict policy against male or female nudity below the waist.

The New York Times calls Passionflix a “sort of a sexy Hallmark Channel.”
