Plex announces new Follow feature, enhancing social capabilities
The streaming platform already allows viewers to share their favorites; now they can follow the recommendations of others.
Although Plex offers a huge selection of free streaming content, including on-demand as well as free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels, the platform offers much more than just TV and movies. It’s an all-encompassing service that allows viewers to connect with others, share their favorites, and store their own private media on dedicated servers if they wish. Plex has announced that a new feature is rolling out for its subscribers: Follow, which lets audiences see favorites of other Plex users.
Key Details:
- Find more great content: Follow is intended to help viewers discover new TV and movies.
- Helping hand: The Follow feature is launching with the participation of influencers that viewers can now track.
- Building up: Follow is a continued evolution of the profiles features launched by Plex in January.
The Follow feature lets customers follow the activity of other Plex users. Whenever a user puts a TV show or movie on their watchlist, rates, or reviews content from across the Plex platform — including from subscription streamers like Netflix or Hulu — all their followers will also be able to see those updates as well.
The launch of Follow will allow Plex users to see what their most trusted friends and other influential voices are loving most. Viewers will be able to see not only ratings on streaming titles, but on movies that are still exclusively available in theaters, so they can know which films to keep on watchlists when they make their way to top streaming services.
Follow is also launching with the participation of a list of top influencers, so fans of those influencers can jump in on Plex and start following their recommendations and reviews right away. Influencers Alex Rabinowitz, Charles Jourdan, Hadiyah Weaver, Alex Coleman, Coco, Nirupam Dhakal, Vetz, Tiffie Starchild, and Kit Lazer have joined with Plex for the launch of Follow.
“We are excited to make it easier for the Plex community to connect with one another, and to find great content for their families, with the roll out of our Follow feature,” Plex CEO Keith Valory said. “With over 600 free LiveTV channels, 50,000 free on-demand titles, and the ability to universally search and track content across any streaming service, we offer our customers the most comprehensive way to find, discover, and enjoy the content they love. Now we’re well on our way to helping them connect with each other to make more informed decisions about the content they want to watch, all in service of fixing the streaming struggle.”
The launch of Follow is the natural evolution of features introduced by Plex in January. At that time, Plex first rolled out public profiles, user-generated reviews, and other features that made Plex a more social-friendly platform that allowed viewers to make their favorites public for the first time. Now, audiences are able to track and note those recommendations more easily thanks to the Follow option, which is available for Plex customers now.
