Prime Video to stream the Emmys starting in 2027

Prime Video to stream the Emmys starting in 2027

Yet another awards show is making the shift from linear TV to streaming.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.
Which streaming service won the 2025 Emmy Awards? For our money, it's probably HBO Max.

The awards ceremony for the most sought-after award in television will no longer actually be seen on TV, at least not in the traditional sense. Streaming services have been increasingly successful in winning Emmy Awards over the past decade, and now a streamer has won the Emmys themselves. Starting in 2027, Prime Video will be the exclusive broadcaster of the Emmy Awards through at least 2032.

Key Details:

  • The Emmys go to…: Prime Video will host the Emmy Awards starting in 2027.
  • Flat tire: The move signals an end to the “wheel deal” rotation for the awards.
  • Join the club: Multiple awards ceremonies have shifted to streamers from linear TV in recent years.

Prime Video has secured the rights to the Emmy Awards for the next six years, beginning in 2027. The streamer will be the exclusive host of the awards ceremony and will not share the telecast with any linear channels, be they cable or broadcast. Prime Video will offer the Emmy Awards free globally, opting not to put the ceremony behind a paywall.

For decades, the Emmys telecast had rotated between all of the major broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC — as part of the “Wheel Deal” formerly agreed to by the Television Academy and the networks. However, for at least the next six years, the Emmys will have but a single home, and that home will be a streaming service.

“For nearly eight decades the Emmys have recognized the best storytelling and talent in television, and we’re honored that Prime Video will be trusted as the global home for this celebration over the next six years,” Prime Video head Mike Hopkins said. “Streaming the Emmys free on Prime Video is another way we’re delivering the best in entertainment to our customers worldwide, and we look forward to collaborating with the Television Academy on this iconic event.”

Part of Prime Video’s appeal in the eyes of the academy was the platform’s international reach. Unlike the terrestrial broadcast channels, Amazon has the ability to deliver the ceremony to people around the world, thus promoting all of the shows highlighted to far larger audiences.

“Television has never been more global, and the Emmys should be a celebration that the world can share,” Television Academy chair Cris Abrego said. “Now Prime Video audiences in more than 200 countries will be able to experience the Emmys live with no subscription required. Our broadcast partners have been tremendous stewards of the Emmys for many years, helping to build them into the cultural institution they are today. Having a dedicated home with Prime Video allows us to build on that legacy with unprecedented global reach and a broader commitment to the Television Academy and our mission throughout the year. Amazon shares our deep respect for the history of the Emmys and brings the investment, innovation and scale to help us shape their next chapter.”

Word that Prime Video was interested in the Emmys first began to spread in September. It’s just the latest example of a streamer picking up a major awards show; Netflix has hosted the SAG Awards since 2024, and starting in 2029, the Oscars will stream on YouTube.
