Prime Video to get Lionsgate films after STARZ in new deal
New Lionsgate movies like the next ‘Hunger Games’ title will be available to stream on Prime Video after their theatrical and STARZ runs.
Lionsgate is putting its ducks — and its movies — in a row. The studio is busy getting ready for a life without STARZ, the cable channel/streaming service bundle that it has owned since its launch. Lionsgate and STARZ are in the process of splitting into two separate companies, and Lionsgate is stretching its wings by making new theatrical output deals with streaming services for its movies. Prime Video is the latest partner to make a new agreement with Lionsgate, though STARZ remains an important figure for the studio.
Key Details:
- Prime Video will get Lionsgate movies after they leave an exclusive streaming period on STARZ.
- Past Lionsgate releases will be moved to Prime Video on a case-by-case basis starting in 2026.
- Lionsgate movies are expected to come to streaming faster now than they had before.
The new deal between Lionsgate and Prime Video will allow the Amazon streaming service to license movies from Lionsgate once they’ve finished their theatrical run. The movies will go to STARZ first for an as-yet unspecified time, as part of the deal signed between STARZ and Lionsgate last week.
“We know that Prime members love great movies, and as a first-stop entertainment destination,” Prime Video VP Brad Beale said. “We are excited to bring Lionsgate’s terrific slate of entertaining films to Prime Video soon after their theatrical release.”
The agreement between Lionsgate and Prime Video is expected to take effect starting with the studio’s 2026 film release slate. That slate will include movies like “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” and a new installment in the “Now You See Me” franchise.
Also in 2026, Prime Video will be allowed to pick titles from the Lionsgate catalog, such as the “John Wick” movies to import for its viewers. TV shows like “Weeds” will also be available to Prime Video as part of the agreement.
“This agreement unlocks significant incremental value for our slate while affirming the great popularity of Lionsgate movies among an ever-expanding portfolio of buyers,” Lionsgate executive Jim Packer said.
