Roku launches new, ad-free streamer for only $3 per month

Roku launches new, ad-free streamer for only $3 per month

Howdy by Roku has almost 10,000 hours of entertainment to its name, with major entertainment companies pitching in.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

Roku wants to help viewers who are feeling the pinch of budgetary constraints find something new to stream — without ads! On Tuesday, the company announced the launch of a new streamer called Howdy, which will offer thousands of hours of entertainment without the drawback of commercials during playback at an incredibly affordable price.

Key Details:

  • Ad-free at a discount: Howdy costs just $3 per month.
  • Big-name partners: FilmRise, Lionsgate, and Warner Bros. Discovery have lent content to Howdy.
  • Easy billing: Customers can sign up for Howdy and have it billed alongside other Roku subscriptions.

Howdy is launching nationwide on Tuesday at a price of just $3 per month. The service is packed with nearly 10,000 hours of content at launch, and its library will offer Roku originals that until now have only been available to stream with ads on The Roku Channel.

The Howdy catalog will also include hits from FilmRise, Lionsgate, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The streamer will come with shows and movies like “The Kids in the Hall,” “Weeds,” and “Mad Max: Fury Road,” with a wide range of genres to tempt audiences into tuning in.

“Priced at less than a cup of coffee, Howdy is ad-free and designed to complement, not compete with, premium services,” Roku CEO Anthony Wood said. “We’re meeting a real need for consumers who want to unwind with their favorite movies and shows uninterrupted and on their terms. Howdy is a natural step for us at Roku, extending our mission to make better TV for everyone, by making it affordable, accessible, and built for how people watch today.”

Another key feature of Howdy is that viewers can sign up for the streamer directly through Roku, like the dozens of other streaming subscriptions that are available through The Roku Channel. That means customers who subscribe can be billed directly through Roku, keeping their separate invoices all together in one place.

“We’re excited to continue our longstanding collaboration with Roku on innovative ways to connect with audiences,” Lionsgate executive Jim Packer said. “With engagement of over 125 million people a day, Roku is the perfect partner to launch a more accessible complement to the higher-priced SVODs. This service has the ability to scale quickly while providing us with a new way to monetize our content, and we’re proud to be part of this new streaming experience.”

Roku Channel

The Roku Channel is a free, ad-supported streaming service that offers a broad mix of movies, TV shows, live linear channels, and original programming. Available to all viewers — not just Roku device owners — the service features licensed content from major studios alongside Roku Originals, which include exclusive series, movies, and specials previously produced for Quibi, as well as new original projects developed specifically for the platform.

Programming on The Roku Channel spans multiple genres, including drama, comedy, reality TV, news, and family-friendly content. Popular titles and originals include “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” “Die Hart,” “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” and a rotating library of classic films and TV series. The platform also offers live news channels, sports highlights, and themed FAST channels covering everything from classic TV to lifestyle programming.

Viewers can watch The Roku Channel for free on Roku devices, smart TVs, streaming players, mobile devices, and web browsers, with no subscription required. The service is also available on platforms like Amazon Fire TV and Samsung smart TVs, expanding its reach beyond the Roku ecosystem. While ads are included, the experience is designed to be lighter than traditional broadcast television.

With its combination of free access, original content, live channels, and on-demand entertainment, The Roku Channel has become one of the most widely available and accessible streaming destinations for viewers looking to watch without a monthly subscription.
