Roku to tie new original releases to Roku City views

Roku to tie new original releases to Roku City views

Starting with an upcoming Demi Lovato special, Roku will showcase original programming on its platforms by integrating them with the Roku City.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

Roku has a great selection of free streaming content available, but if you choose to watch that content through a Roku device, you also get the fun of visually exploring the Roku City user interface art. Most of the time, however, the Roku City experience isn’t interactive; that’s changing, as on Tuesday, Roku announced that it was launching a new initiative to show off original programming with Roku City art.

Key Details:

  • City views: Roku will showcase original streaming content in the Roku City design going forward.
  • Starting strong: Kicking off this campaign is a special performance by Demi Lovato.
  • More than just song: Viewers can also see behind-the-scenes videos, Lovato’s personal streaming recommendations, and more.

Roku Channel

The Roku Channel is a free, ad-supported streaming service that offers a broad mix of movies, TV shows, live linear channels, and original programming. Available to all viewers — not just Roku device owners — the service features licensed content from major studios alongside Roku Originals, which include exclusive series, movies, and specials previously produced for Quibi, as well as new original projects developed specifically for the platform.

Programming on The Roku Channel spans multiple genres, including drama, comedy, reality TV, news, and family-friendly content. Popular titles and originals include “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” “Die Hart,” “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” and a rotating library of classic films and TV series. The platform also offers live news channels, sports highlights, and themed FAST channels covering everything from classic TV to lifestyle programming.

Viewers can watch The Roku Channel for free on Roku devices, smart TVs, streaming players, mobile devices, and web browsers, with no subscription required. The service is also available on platforms like Amazon Fire TV and Samsung smart TVs, expanding its reach beyond the Roku ecosystem. While ads are included, the experience is designed to be lighter than traditional broadcast television.

With its combination of free access, original content, live channels, and on-demand entertainment, The Roku Channel has become one of the most widely available and accessible streaming destinations for viewers looking to watch without a monthly subscription.

Roku has created the “Live from Roku City” experience, which helps guide viewers to new original content that they won’t see anywhere else. As you can see in the photo above, Roku has a promotion for the original content it wants to inform viewers of, as well as a remote shortcut to quickly access that content.

To launch Live from Roku City, the platform has partnered with multi-platinum superstar Demi Lovato. Fans can use the shortcut they see when prompted to watch a rendition of Lovato’s “Here All Night” from her new album, as well as her cover of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Not only can fans watch these performances by Lovato through the Live From Roku City experience, they can also enjoy behind-the-scenes videos, exclusive photos, personal streaming recommendations from Lovato herself, and a pre-save option for her new album.

“With ‘Live from Roku City’ we’re doubling down on so much of what makes our platform special. Roku delivers TV’s broadest reach environment, and with the addition of original video storytelling for the first time in Roku City, we’re also providing TV’s biggest stage,” Roku president Charlie Collier said. “Demi Lovato is an artist who has thrived on authenticity and a steadfast dedication to her fans, and we’re showcasing both in the first of many new, creative, and unique ways artists can shine at scale on our platform.”

The Roku Channel offers a ton of great original content, and using the Roku City user experience to promote it makes all the sense in the world. Roku hasn’t shared how much they plan to use Roku City to publicize new titles in the future, but it likely will do so from time to time at the very least.

“I’m beyond excited to partner with Roku again to give the first taste of a live performance from my new music era,” Lovato said. “‘It’s Not That Deep’ represents an electric energy I’m feeling about life right now, and I can’t wait to share that with everyone Live from Roku City.”
