Where do Skydance Media movies go to stream?
Where do Skydance Media movies go to stream?
It’s easy to say where Skydance’s movies stream for now, but is the company’s merger with Paramount going to change that?
Skydance Media used to be one of the less well-known studios in Hollywood, but that’s all changing. The company is set to merge with Paramount Global in a process that has stretched on for months as of the time of this writing, but is nearing completion. That deal will herald a new era for both Paramount and Skydance, who have teamed up on movies like the “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun” franchises multiple times in the past.
Will the deal mean changes to the streaming arrangements for Skydance movies as they currently stand? We’ll get into all of that and tell you where you can stream movies from Skydance Media after they leave theaters currently as well.
Where do Skydance Media movies stream after theaters?
Where do movies from Skydance Media stream first?
Skydance Media usually turns to Paramount to distribute its movies in the United States, and all of those movies are sent to streaming on Paramount+ once they’re no longer exclusive to theaters and transactional video-on-demand (TVOD) platforms. That makes it simple enough to say where Skydance movies stream first after leaving theaters.
Occasionally, Skydance partners with Apple TV+ or Netflix to have those services distribute its movies to streaming first. Those movies go straight to on-demand; titles distributed this way include “Fountain of Youth” on Apple TV+, and “Spellbound” on Netflix.
Where do Skydance movies go after Paramount+?
After they finish streaming exclusively on Paramount+, Skydance movies can be licensed out to other platforms. Many follow the same path that Paramount’s own movies do, and stream on the MGM+ App once they’re all finished on Paramount+. Paramount agreed to an extended output deal with MGM’s owner, Amazon, in 2024, so it’s a good bet that Skydance movies will keep going there as well.
Will the Skydance merger with Paramount change streaming arrangements?
The merger of Paramount and Skydance is extremely unlikely to lead to changes regarding where movies go to stream first after leaving theaters; Paramount+ is almost certain to remain the first destination for those movies.
There could be changes in the length of time those movies stay on Paramount+, however. Incoming Paramount executive Jeff Shell has said he plans to Reexamine the way Paramount windows its streaming content, and that could include movies. It’s possible that Paramount and Skydance movies will stay on Paramount+ for shorter periods in the future, in order to create more licensing opportunities for extra streaming partners.
