When will ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swing onto streaming?

When will ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ swing onto streaming?

Tom Holland is back as Peter Parker in the newest Spidey sequel, and we’ll give you our prediction on when it will hit streaming.

Known for breaking major streaming stories, he’s covered everything from Netflix policy shifts to Peacock’s ad-tier changes. A sci-fi fan and Toshiba Fire TV user, he brings sharp analysis and a love for the genre to his reporting.

Everyone’s favorite friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man is finally swinging back into movie theaters. While technically the release day for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is Friday, July 31, preview screenings have already begun, with wider releases happening on Thursday. Both the critical and audience reception to the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film have been overwhelmingly positive, but if instead of prepping your cosplay to attend the cinema on opening weekend you are instead counting down the days until you can stream the movie at home, we’ve got a pretty good guess as to how long you will have to wait.

Key Details:

  • Brand new sequel: The newest “Spider-Man” film hits theaters on July 31.
  • Distribution chain: Sony is the distributor of the film, meaning it will stream on Netflix, then Disney+.
  • Have patience: The movie is virtually guaranteed to have quite a long theatrical window.

The film takes place four years after “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” in a world where Doctor Strange’s spell has made everyone forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Peter has given up his friends and family to continue protecting New York City, but a larger mystery soon embroils the young hero, who must also grapple with the consequences of his past.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and welcomes MCU vets including Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle and Mark Ruffalo’s Dr. Bruce Banner to Peter Parker’s world, while Zendaya’s MJ, Jacob Batalon’s Ned Leeds, and Michael Mando’s Scorpion all return for more web-slinging fun. Joining the cast will be “Severance” Emmy winner Trammel Tillman and “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink, although no one really knows for sure who she is playing, despite intense online speculation.

Following the events of “No Way Home,” Peter Parker now lives a lonely, isolated life in a New York City where no one remembers his identity. Without the support of his friends or Aunt May, he devotes himself entirely to fighting crime as Spider-Man. But as the pressures of his isolated double life intensify, Peter begins undergoing a mysterious physical transformation that could threaten both his future and the city he has sworn to protect.

Based on the advance screenings, critics have given “Brand New Day” a 91% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a favorably nice 69 on Metacritic. The audience score on RT is an impressive (but potentially skewed due to early excitement) 98%.

When will ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ be available to stream?

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is being produced and distributed by Sony, so we know what pattern it will follow once it’s no longer exclusive to theaters or premium video-on-demand (PVOD) services. Sony has a global Pay-1 deal with Netflix, so the movie will stream on the world’s largest streaming service first. It will remain there for 18 months, then migrate to Disney+.

Despite knowing that cadence, we will probably have a long wait before we can stream the film on Netflix. Sony has had some terrible flops set in the Spider-Man universe, such as “Kraven the Hunter,” “Madame Web,” and “Morbius.” Despite being failures with audiences and critics, however, these movies all stayed in theaters for more than 90 days, and some of them for more than 150 days.

Plus, since Sony doesn’t have a financial stake in Netflix, the company tends to keep its films on PVOD and TVOD (transactional video-on-demand) platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV for far longer than its competitors in order to maximize the films’ revenue via digital rentals and purchases.

I think “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” will outperform those previous Sony titles by quite a bit, and will arrive on Netflix on Friday, Dec. 18 — 140 days after first coming out in theaters. That aligns with the studio’s release pattern and will allow it to capitalize on the holiday season, when audiences have more time to relax and stream a new movie. If that prediction is accurate, the movie will arrive on Disney+ in summer 2027.
