From a coach’s daughter to a cheerleader who could save the world to a country music superstar, the actress grew up on screens large and small.
Hayden Panettiere, the actress who burst onto the Hollywood scene in Remember the Titans and became a household name thanks to “Heroes” has died at the age of 36.
For many viewers, Panettiere seemed to grow up right alongside them. She got her acting start on soap operas in “One Life to Live” and “Guiding Light” as a child before popping up in movies like “Remember the Titans,” “A Bug’s Life,” and “Raising Helen.” By the mid-2000s, roles in “Ice Princess” and “Bring It On: All or Nothing” had made her one of the era’s most recognizable young stars.
Her biggest breakthrough came as indestructible Claire Bennet on NBC’s groundbreaking superhero show “Heroes.” Not only was her character the cornerstone of the show, but she was also at the center of its unforgettable mantra of “Save the cheerleader, save the world.” As she moved into more adult roles, Panettiere played troubled country singer Juliette Barnes on “Nashville,” earning her two Golden Globe nominations.
Panettiere also became a fan favorite as the title role in I Love You, Beth Cooper and amongst horror audiences as Kirby Reed in “Scream 4” eventually returning to the role more than a decade later in “Scream VI.” Despite being out of the public eye for a number of years, Panettiere began acting again in earnest following her return to the Scream franchise, releasing a film a year in 2024-2026.
Earlier this year, she released her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” detailing her struggles with postpartum depression and addiction, and coming out as bisexual. With a career that stretched from childhood family films to superhero television, prestige drama, and one of Hollywood’s most enduring horror franchises, Panettiere leaves behind a remarkably varied body of work.
