Lulu Wang’s “Expats” Gets Trailer

The Farewell” filmmaker Lulu Wang is making her highly anticipated follow-up next month on Prime Video with “Expats,” and the streamer has released the first trailer for the six-part limited series.

Based on the best-selling novel “The Expatriates” by Janice Y. K. Lee, “Expats” stars Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo, Brian Tee, and Jack Huston and is set in 2014 Hong Kong, where the lives of three American women (Kidman, Blue, Yoo) lives intersect after a sudden family tragedy, “interrogat[ing] privilege and explor[ing] what happens when the line between victimhood and culpability becomes blurred.”

The series will premiere with two episodes on Jan. 26, 2024, with new episodes launching weekly until the finale on Feb. 23, 2024.


Apple TV+ Renews “The Buccaneers”

The Buccaneers are here to stay! Apple TV+ has given a Season 2 renewal to its acclaimed drama “The Buccaneers,” inspired by Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name.

Set amidst 1870s English aristocracy, the series centers on the arrival of a group of fun-loving American girls into London society, resulting in a culture clash with differing approaches to tradition. Kristine Frøseth, Alisha Boe, Josie Totah, Aubri Ibrag, and Imogen Waterhouse lead the period drama with Josh Dylan, Guy Remmers, Matthew Broome, Barney Fishwick, Christina Hendricks, and Mia Threapleton.

“The Buccaneers” debuted on the streamer on Nov. 8 and concluded its eight-episode first season on Dec. 13.


MGM+ Renews “Beacon 23”

MGM+ will shine the light back on the sci-fi mystery/thriller series “Beacon 23,” which has received a Season 2 renewal from the streamer, as well as Spectrum and AMC.

The series is, based on the best-selling book by Hugh Howey, premiered on Nov. 12, and stars Stephan James and Lena Headey as Halan and Aster, an ex-military man and a government agent, respectively, who find themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that served as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers. In Season 2, per the logline, “Beacon 23 is now little more than a prison with Aleph onboard, and The Artifact provides more questions than answers. Without a clear path forward, the inhabitants of Beacon 23 must rely on each other, but their conflicting agendas may get in the way.”

James will return for Season 2 opposite Natasha Mumba and Ellen Wong with additional cast members to be announced. Season 2 will premiere on MGM+ in April 2024.


Netflix to Remake “ONE PIECE” Anime

Following the acclaim of its recent “ONE PIECE” live-action adaptation, Netflix is back on the high seas with the I.P. and has announced it’s making a remake of the original anime.

“THE ONE PIECE” will start from the iconic East Blue saga, the first/introductory sagas of the manga created by Eiichiro Oda. The high-seas adventure follows a young adventurer named Monkey D. Luffy, who sets off from his small village to find the legendary fabled treasure, the One Piece, to become King of the Pirates.

The new project comes on the heels of the news the streamer had renewed its live-action series for a second season after topping the weekly charts in its first two weeks.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date or a cast for “THE ONE PIECE,” but production has begun.


Apple TV+ Announces New Jon Hamm-Led Drama

The Morning Show” star Jon Hamm is back with Apple TV+ on a newly announced project.

The streamer has ordered the drama series “Your Friends and Neighbors,” which will star the Emmy winner as Coop, a recently divorced hedge fund manager who, after being fired, resorts to stealing from the wealthy residents in his tiny upstate New York suburb in order to keep his family’s lifestyle afloat. All is well and good for Coop and his plan… until he breaks into the wrong house at the wrong time.

This will be the first time Hamm will lead an ongoing series since his seven-season run on “Mad Men.” Further cast members will be announced in the future.


“Warrior” Canceled at Max, Will Move Library to Netflix

Warrior” has once again been defeated, but the martial arts crime drama doesn’t stay down for long. Max has announced it will not be renewing the series for a fourth season. However, Netflix has picked up the series’ library in a co-exclusive deal with Max, bringing all three seasons to the streamer in February 2024.

This will be the third home in as many years for the series, which is based on an original concept and treatment by Bruce Lee, after premiering on Cinemax in 2019. When Cinemax exited from making originals, Max picked up the series for a third season, which premiered this past summer.

“Warrior” is set during the brutal Tong Wars of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the late 19th century and stars Andrew Koji as Ah Sahm, a martial arts prodigy who emigrates from China to San Francisco under mysterious circumstances, becoming a hatchet man for the Hope Wei, one of Chinatown’s most powerful organized crime families.

In addition to Koji, Olivia Cheng, Dianne Doan, Jason Tobin, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Tom Weston-Jones, Hoon Lee, Perry Yung, Langley Kirkwood, Miranda Raison, Chen Tang, Chelsea Muirhead, Mark Dacascos, and Joe Taslim also star.
