Streaming stories you may have missed this week
F1 still hunting for media rights partners
Formula 1 is still looking for a partner to broadcast its races after 2025. The racing league is in the final year of a deal with ESPN, and though talks are still ongoing between the two, the sides aren’t outwardly any closer to a renewal. F1 is still talking to other outlets as well, though recent reports indicate its asking price of more than $150 million per year for American broadcast rights isn’t generating much excitement.
‘Roundball Rock’ officially coming back to NBC
NBC will become an NBA broadcast partner once again in 2025, with games airing on the over-the-air channel as well as the Peacock streaming service. NBC announced on Saturday that it was officially bringing back the beloved “Roundball Rock” theme song by John Tesh when broadcasts begin this fall. In addition, NBC will welcome former Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony to its NBA coverage as a studio analyst.
Lionsgate, Starz complete split
As of Wednesday, Lionsgate and Starz are trading separately on the New York Stock Exchange. That means the formal division of the company into two separate businesses is complete, a process that officially began in 2023, is now complete. In late April, shareholders voted overwhelmingly to approve the division of Lionsgate and Starz, which will now move forward as separate companies to pursue their own corporate goals.
CuriosityStream records a profit
The documentary streamer CuriosityStream also reported its first quarter 2025 earnings this week, unveiling its results on Tuesday. It announced that its net income was positive for the first time in the service’s history, and turned in a gross profit of $8 million. For a streamer with a content segment as niche as CuriosityStream’s, showing a profit even as major streamers like Peacock are struggling to achieve that goal is impressive indeed.
‘Yellowstone’ spinoff will premiere on CBS
There are a number of “Yellowstone” spinoffs and titles set in the Dutton universe coming to the screen in the next few years. On Wednesday, a report from Deadline confirmed that a Kayce Dutton-focused spinoff of the show — titled “Y: Marshals” for the present — has officially been ordered been ordered by CBS. The show has been in development for some time, and NBC has expressed anger over it, claiming that its deal with Paramount for “Yellowstone” streaming rights also encompasses the new series as well.
