WNBA extends deal with Scripps

The WNBA lives on ION on Friday nights during the regular season, and that arrangement isn’t changing any time soon. The league has signed a new multi-year agreement with Scripps, which will keep games on the channel for the foreseeable future. The WNBA will also continue to partner with Disney, NBC, CBS, and Amazon to distribute games.

Netflix adds live channels in France

Netflix has undergone some fairly big changes in recent months. It has rolled out a new user interface on smart TVs, and is continuing to add more live sports as well. The streamer is now beginning a new experiment — adding live channels. On Tuesday, Netflix announced that it was teaming with the French network TF1 to add live streams of its channels for all customers in France. It doesn’t necessarily indicate Netflix has any plans to add live channels in the United States, but it’s another intriguing evolution for the service as it plots a course for the future.

Acorn TV promotion yields record viewing hours, signups

The British TV streaming service Acorn TV leaned into the mystery section of its catalog in May, with excellent results. The “Murder Mystery May” programming event featured new mystery TV shows and movie premieres, and brought a huge amount of attention to the service. Total viewing hours exceeded 20 million, the first time in Acorn TV history that the service reached that number. New sign-ups hit a four-year high, and social engagement also hit a year-to-date high for the streamer.

Tubi adds new sports documentaries

The free ad-supported streamer Tubi has a really impressive selection of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels and on-demand content. Like most free streamers, however, it has less in the way of sports than it does entertainment. But this week, Tubi announced that it was adding two new sports documentaries; one based on football, and the other on tennis.

“The Second Set” with Naomi Osaka will give fans an intimate look into the tennis star’s return to the sport after the birth of her child, and will be released in August. “Zero Star: The Cam Ward Story” will follow the rise of the new Tennessee Titans quarterback, from high school all the way through his selection as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. This docuseries will come out in September.

Netflix plans to open more ‘Houses’ in the U.S.

The Netflix House experience is one of the most interesting promotions the streamer has ever done. It’s a structure that immerses viewers in popular Netflix shows; visitors can go to Hawkins, Indiana, or see a game of Red Light, Green Light from “Squid Game” unfold before their eyes, then head to the Netflix Bites area for some great eats! On Tuesday, Netflix announced it was opening two Netflix House locations; one at the King of Prussia Mall in Philadelphia and one in Dallas at Galleria Dallas in late 2025. In 2027, a third location will open at BLVD Las Vegas.
