"Black Doves" is the best underrated thriller on Netflix.

Netflix puts out a ton of shows every year, and yes, some of them completely take over the conversation like “The Night Agent.” But for every one of those, there are a few really good series that just kind of slip through the cracks. That’s exactly what happened with “Black Doves.” It’s a slick, character-driven spy thriller led by Keira Knightley, it’s packed with action, it’s got real emotional weight, and critics loved it. And yet, a lot of people either missed it entirely or just never got around to it. If you’re looking for the best under-the-radar thriller series on Netflix, this is absolutely the one I’d start with.

Why ‘Black Doves’ is the most underrated thriller series on Netflix

One of the things “Black Doves” does really well right away is set up a clean, compelling hook. Keira Knightley plays Helen Webb, who, on the surface, looks like a normal wife and mom living in London. But (of course) she’s also secretly a spy-for-hire working for a shadowy organization called the Black Doves. When her lover is suddenly assassinated, her past comes crashing back into her present, and her old partner Sam (Ben Whishaw) is pulled back in to help protect her. From there, the show quickly expands into something much bigger, with political conspiracies, gangland players, and international stakes all colliding at once.

What keeps the show interesting is how it balances all of that spy-thriller stuff with something a little more emotional. This isn’t just about uncovering a conspiracy or chasing down bad guys. A lot of the story is built around Helen and Sam’s relationship, their history, and the way their lives have pulled them in completely different directions. The show keeps coming back to friendship, loyalty, and the cost of living a double life, which gives it a different feel than a lot of more straightforward spy series. It’s still tense and fast-moving, but there’s actually some heart underneath all the chaos.

I think the tone is where “Black Doves” really separates itself from most Netflix thrillers. It’s doing a lot at once. You’ve got brutal action scenes, you’ve got dry humor, and then you’ve got these quieter, almost cozy moments with Helen’s family. And it’s all set during Christmas, which sounds kind of random at first, but it actually works. The holiday setting adds this weird contrast where you’re watching car chases and shootouts right next to Christmas lights and school plays. It gives the whole thing a slightly offbeat vibe that makes it stand out in the genre. Not everyone’s going to love that mix, but if you’re into something that’s a little different, it really clicks.

Another big reason the show works is the cast. Keira Knightley is great here. She completely sells the idea that Helen can be both a loving mom and someone who’s absolutely lethal when she needs to be. Ben Whishaw is just as important. He brings a softer, more conflicted energy to the show, and his dynamic with Knightley is easily one of the best parts of the series. Then you’ve got Sarah Lancashire as the group’s icy handler, who is basically terrifying every time she’s on screen. The supporting cast is stacked, too, and even the smaller characters get moments that actually land instead of just feeling like filler.

So why didn’t this thing completely blow up? A lot of it comes down to timing and how Netflix rolled it out. “Black Doves” dropped in early December, which sounds like a good window, but Netflix was absolutely packed with bigger, louder releases at the time. Between major movies and returning hits, this one just didn’t get the same level of attention. On top of that, the Christmas angle probably made some people think of it as a seasonal watch, which weirdly works against it. If you didn’t jump in during the holidays, it’s easy to forget to circle back to it later.

Add in the fact that the tone is a little unconventional, and it makes sense why it didn’t immediately become a must-watch for everyone. But if you’re into character-driven thrillers that aren’t afraid to take a few risks, this one really delivers. Plus, they are well underway filming Season 2, so if you love it, you can rest assured there’s more coming.

What is ‘Black Doves’ about?

“Black Doves” follows Helen Webb, a seemingly ordinary London mother who is secretly living a second life as a spy-for-hire working for a covert organization known as the Black Doves. When her secret lover is assassinated, Helen is pulled back into a dangerous world she thought she had under control, forcing her to team up again with her former partner, Sam.

As they dig into the murder, they uncover a deep conspiracy that stretches from the British government to the criminal underworld and beyond, all while Helen struggles to keep her family life from collapsing under the weight of her double life.

Other underappreciated thriller TV shows on Netflix

If you enjoy “Black Doves” and want more underrated thrillers on Netflix, there are a few other shows worth checking out. Start with “The Night Agent.” It follows a low-level FBI agent working a White House emergency phone line who gets pulled into a massive government conspiracy after a late-night call. It’s fast, high-stakes, and hard to stop once you start. Another newer option is “The Beast in Me.” It centers on a grieving author who becomes obsessed with her wealthy neighbor, a man suspected of murdering his wife.

And then there’s “His & Hers.” This one follows a journalist who returns home to cover a murder, only to butt heads with her estranged husband, the detective on the case. If you like thrillers that mix character work with suspense, all three are great follow-ups after “Black Doves.”
