Expecting laughs? These 7 pregnancy rom-coms deliver

Love, laughs, and labor pains — these movies prove pregnancy is the ultimate plot twist.

I watched the new Amy Schumer comedy,“Kinda Pregnant” with my wife last night and it was (on the whole) a good time. First, it’s actually funny and second, it pays off the high concept in all the ways you want it to (more on this shortly). I love romantic comedies, and so it got me thinking about all the other rom-com pregnancy movies out there. Not that many get made (Hollywood is a male-dominated industry), but there are some excellent movies among the ones that did. Here’s my list of the top 7 pregnancy rom-coms you can stream right now.

Top 7 pregnancy rom-com movies you can stream right now

No. 7: ‘What To Expect When You’re Expecting’ (2012) | Rent with Prime Video

Coming in at No. 7 on the list of top pregnancy rom-coms is “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” This star-packed comedy brings together Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, and Anna Kendrick for a wild ride through the ups and downs of pregnancy. The movie follows five couples, each dealing with their own version of baby madness—whether it’s an unexpected pregnancy, a long-awaited adoption, or the reality check that no amount of planning actually prepares you for parenthood. There’s a dance-show fitness star trying to keep her cool, a pregnancy guru who’s totally not prepared for the real thing, and a group of clueless dads just trying to survive. It’s messy, funny, and totally relatable for anyone who’s ever been - or known - an expecting parent.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting

May 17, 2012

Challenges of impending parenthood turn the lives of five couples upside down. Two celebrities are unprepared for the surprise demands of pregnancy; hormones wreak havoc on a baby-crazy author, while her husband tries not to be outdone by his father, who’s expecting twins with his young trophy wife; a photographer’s husband isn’t sure about his wife’s adoption plans; a one-time hook-up results in a surprise pregnancy for rival food-truck owners.

No. 6: ‘Kinda Pregnant’ (2025) | Netflix

Coming in at No. 6 is the aforementioned “Kinda Pregnant,” a wild new comedy from Happy Madison Productions, directed by Adam Sandler’s nephew, Tyler Spindel. Amy Schumer stars as Lainy, a woman who fakes a pregnancy to keep up with her newly expecting best friend, only to find herself in way over her head. What starts as a small lie spirals into full-blown chaos as Lainy navigates baby showers, maternity perks, and an unexpected romance - all while keeping up the charade. With Schumer’s signature sharp humor and plenty of ridiculous situations, “Kinda Pregnant” definitely pays off the premise of faking a baby bump to enjoy the perks it comes with, even if it’s missing some of the deeper, emotional truths that come with wanting to be a mother. If you’re into comedies that don’t take themselves too seriously but still have a little heart, check it out.

When Lainy’s plan to settle down and start a family falls apart, she puts on a fake baby bump, tells a lie — and accidentally falls for her dream guy.

No. 5: ‘Babes’ (2024) | Hulu

Coming in at No. 5 is “Babes.” My wife and I watched this on Hulu as soon as it dropped, and it was exactly what we were hoping for. Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau are a perfect duo in this sharp, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt comedy about adulthood’s unexpected curveballs. Glazer plays Eden, a free-spirited yoga instructor who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant after a one-night stand. Unsure of what to do next, she leans on her best friend Dawn (Buteau), a practical, no-nonsense mom who’s seen it all. The movie delivers plenty of laughs, but it also explores the messiness of friendship, motherhood, and just trying to figure things out. It’s funny, real, and absolutely worth a watch. It’s also one of the best movies on Hulu right now.

After getting pregnant from a one-night stand, a single woman leans on her married best friend and mother of two to guide her through gestation and beyond.

No. 4: ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ (2016) | Max

Coming in at No. 4 is “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” the long-awaited return of everyone’s favorite lovable mess, Bridget Jones. This time around, Bridget (Renée Zellweger) is 43, single again, and totally fine with it -until she finds out she’s pregnant and has absolutely no idea who the father is. Is it her old flame, Mark Darcy? Or the charming American she had a fling with? Cue the awkward encounters, wild guesses, and classic Bridget-style chaos as she tries to figure out who’s about to become her baby daddy. The movie delivers everything you want from a “Bridget Jones” film - sharp humor, heartfelt moments, and plenty of secondhand embarrassment. And if you’re in the mood for more of Bridget’s misadventures, a new addition to the series just dropped with “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” on Peacock.

Bridget Jones’s Baby

September 14, 2016

After breaking up, Bridget Jones’ happily-ever-after hasn’t quite gone according to plan. Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job and surround herself with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. Then her love life takes a turn when she meets Jack. A week later, she runs into Mark before she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch - she’s not sure of the identity of her baby’s father - Mark or Jack.

No. 3: ‘Baby Mama’ (2008) | Hulu

I watched this movie for the first time about a year ago, and it quickly became one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen: ”Baby Mama,” written and directed by Michael McCullers. The movie pairs Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as total opposites forced into a chaotic partnership - Fey plays a successful but uptight businesswoman struggling to have a baby, while Poehler is the free-spirited, wildly unprepared woman she hires as her surrogate. Naturally, things don’t go smoothly, and what starts as a simple arrangement turns into a messy (but very funny) crash course in unlikely friendship and motherhood. With Fey and Poehler’s perfect comedic timing, “Baby Mama” has serious laughs while sneaking in a little heart along the way. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good comedy with two of the best in the business, this one’s worth a watch.

A successful, single businesswoman who dreams of having a baby discovers she is infertile and hires a working class woman to be her unlikely surrogate.

No. 2: ‘Juno’ (2007) | Hulu

Coming in at No. 2 is “Juno,” the little indie comedy that became a full-blown cultural phenomenon. Directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody, the film launched both Elliot Page and Michael Cera into stardom with their breakout performances. Page plays Juno, a whip-smart, sarcastic teen who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant and decides to give the baby up for adoption - only to realize that adulthood is way more complicated than she thought. The movie’s razor-sharp dialogue, quirky aesthetic, and killer indie soundtrack made it an instant classic, helping it gross over $230 million worldwide on a tiny budget. But beyond the witty one-liners, “Juno” delivers a heartfelt and surprisingly profound take on growing up, making mistakes, and figuring out what kind of person you want to be.

December 5, 2007

When an offbeat young woman faces an unplanned pregnancy, she makes an unusual decision regarding her unborn child. This movie features an Oscar-winning script from Diablo Cody and an all-star cast including Elliot Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman, Allison Janney, and J. K. Simmons.

Roger Ebert ranked “Juno” the best film of 2007.

No. 1: ‘Knocked Up’ (2007) | Prime Video

There are pregnancy comedies, and then there’s “Knocked Up.” This 2007 Judd Apatow classic took an R-rated, laugh-out-loud approach to impending parenthood and became one of the defining comedies of its era. Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl star as total opposites - a scrappy, directionless slacker and a put-together, career-driven woman - who wind up expecting a baby after a one-night stand. What could’ve been a by-the-numbers rom-com instead delivers big laughs, sharp writing, and surprisingly real emotional depth, cementing Apatow’s signature mix of crude humor and heart. The film was a massive hit, raking in over $200 million worldwide and making Rogen a bona fide leading man. It also launched a wave of Apatow-style comedies that dominated the late 2000s. No surprise, it made my list of the best Judd Apatow movies to stream. If you somehow haven’t seen it, now’s the time.
