When people jump into BritBox, the biggest adjustment usually isn’t the accents. It’s the humor. British comedies tend to be a little meaner, a little quieter, and much more comfortable sitting in discomfort than most American sitcoms. “One Foot in the Grave” is the perfect example of that. This show takes on everyday frustration and pushes it into absurd, dark, and often unexpected territory. It’s sharp, weird, and way more relatable even if you’ve never watched a British sitcom before. Here’s why it works so well as a starting point.

What is ‘One Foot in the Grave’ about?

“One Foot in the Grave” follows Victor Meldrew, a grumpy, recently retired man living in a quiet English suburb with his wife Margaret. With his routine gone, Victor becomes hyper-aware of every broken appliance, rude neighbor, and minor injustice around him. What starts as an everyday annoyance quickly snowballs into increasingly absurd situations, often involving terrible luck, surreal coincidences, and Victor’s inability to let anything slide.

Margaret acts as both Victor’s anchor and his reality check, trying to keep things from spinning completely out of control while still clearly loving him. Around them are friends and neighbors who either fuel the chaos or get caught in it. The show turns ordinary domestic life into something strange, dark, and very funny, using frustration as the engine and surprise as the payoff.

One Foot in the Grave is a BBC television sitcom series. The series features the exploits of Victor Meldrew and his long-suffering wife, Margaret. The programmes invariably deal with Meldrew’s battle against the problems he creates for himself. Living in a typical household in an unnamed English suburb, Victor takes involuntary early retirement. His various efforts to keep himself busy, while encountering various misfortunes and misunderstandings are the themes of the sitcom. Despite its traditional production, the series supplants its domestic sitcom setting with elements of black humour and surrealism.

Why ‘One Foot in the Grave’ is the must-watch comedy on BritBox

Okay, yes, this show looks old. But “One Foot in the Grave” is super easy to get into. Victor Meldrew is forced into early retirement and suddenly has way too much time to notice how annoying the world is. Everything breaks. Everyone’s incompetent. Nothing works the way it’s supposed to. And Victor cannot let any of it go.

If you love “Curb Your Enthusiasm” as much as me, this is where the lightbulb goes on. Victor has the same core energy as Larry David. He’s convinced he’s the only sane person left, and the world keeps proving him right in increasingly ridiculous ways. Small problems spiral. Minor inconveniences turn into personal crusades. And just like in “Curb,” the comedy comes from watching someone react way too honestly to things we all quietly hate.

Now, the big difference is perspective. Victor is older, he’s retired, and he feels pushed aside by modern life instead of just irritated by it. That gives the show a slightly sadder, more human edge under the laughs. You’re laughing at his meltdowns, but you also kind of get why he’s losing it.

The other thing that makes this show stand out is how dark it’s willing to get. This is not a cozy, predictable sitcom. Episodes start in familiar places and then take hard left turns into absurd, sometimes morbid territory. And yet it all works, because the writing commits fully and the characters react like real people trapped in unreal situations.

For me, this show works on an emotional level because of Victor’s relationship with his wife, Margaret. She’s not just there to roll her eyes. She’s the grounding force, and there’s real affection between these two, even when everything else is going off the rails. That balance keeps the comedy from feeling mean or hollow. No matter how strange things get, there’s always a human core holding it together.

My personal comedy ethos is always funny, with heart, and this show nails that balance. Yes, it’s an older show, and that’s actually part of why it’s such a good place to start. It’s not chasing trends. It’s just doing its thing on BritBox so check it out.

Other must-stream comedy shows on BritBox

If you want something after “One Foot in the Grave,” lean into louder, messier family chaos with “Friday Night Dinner.” The whole show revolves around weekly Friday night dinners at the Goodman family home, where two grown sons show up, immediately start needling each other, and somehow derail every meal.

If you’re in the mood for something faster and more joke-packed, “The IT Crowd” is an easy next click. It’s set inside a big, dysfunctional corporation where the IT department is stuck in a basement and mostly ignored by everyone else. The comedy comes from workplace disasters, social awkwardness, and a trio of characters who are wildly unprepared for anything resembling normal human interaction.

And if you want to see what modern British comedy looks like, try “The Change.” It follows a woman who hits a personal breaking point and quietly walks away from her life, heading into a strange rural community to figure out what comes next. It’s funny, uncomfortable, and surprisingly thoughtful. A great pick if you want something newer that still feels very British.
