Just signed up for BritBox? Watch ‘Line of Duty’ first

With six twist-filled seasons and a mystery that won’t quit, this is BritBox at its best.

With a background in film and branded content, he covers sports and entertainment with sharp insight and creativity. A longtime Oilers fan, he’s still holding out hope for a Stanley Cup run.
The top drama to watch on BritBox when you first sign-up is "Line of Duty"

I’m a sucker for a dark crime drama, from “True Detective” to a British show like “Luther.” And if you just signed up for BritBox and are ready to dive into its massive library of British crime dramas, there’s one place to start: “Line of Duty.” This one’s not just good, it’s essential. It’s a twisty, high-stakes thriller about corrupt cops, sprawling conspiracies, and the investigators trying to root them out from the inside. Each season unpacks a new case, but there’s also one big mystery threading through the whole thing, and trust me, once it hooks you, you’re in. Here’s why “Line of Duty” should be the first drama you watch on BritBox.

Why ‘Line of Duty’ is the must-watch drama on BritBox

If you want something gripping right out of the gate, “Line of Duty” is your go-to. Every season kicks off with a new investigation, but instead of chasing typical street-level crime, this show goes straight for the rot inside the system. It follows a team of internal affairs detectives who are constantly butting heads with corrupt cops, shady higher-ups, and their own blurred moral lines. You’re not watching heroes and villains here. You’re watching people try to do the right thing in a system that’s wired against them. And the tension? Constant. This isn’t a background watch, it’s a show that makes you lean in.

But what really sets it apart is the slow-burn mystery that runs underneath the whole series. There’s one big question that fuels all six seasons. Who is “H,” the senior officer (or officers?) pulling strings behind the scenes? That question becomes an obsession for both the characters and the audience, and the way the show teases out answers while constantly raising new questions is masterful. Each season builds on the last in really satisfying ways, so it’s best to jump in at the beginning.

The cast is another reason this show works so well. Martin Compston, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar are electric as the core trio. There’s a lot of clipped dialogue, office politics, and interview-room tension, but the chemistry between these three keeps it grounded. They’re not just coworkers. They’re flawed people trying to hold each other up while everything around them falls apart. And each season brings in a new major guest star, like Keeley Hawes or Stephen Graham, who always comes in swinging. These aren’t just cameos, either, but characters capable of stealing whole seasons with their performances.

And here’s the thing. People watched this show. It wasn’t some quiet critical darling. It became a full-on national obsession in the UK. The finale pulled over 15 million viewers, which is just unheard of in the streaming era. People rearranged their Sundays around it, just to keep up with the theories and avoid spoilers. It’s rare for a procedural to become event TV, but “Line of Duty” did exactly that. So if you just signed up for BritBox and you’re wondering what all the hype is about, this is the place to start. It’s not just one of the best British dramas ever made… it might be one of the best TV dramas, period.

What’s ‘Line of Duty’ about?

“Line of Duty” is a cop show, but not the kind you’re used to. Instead of chasing suspects through alleyways, this one’s all about rooting out the corruption inside the police force itself. The story centers on AC-12, a small anti-corruption unit led by the fiercely upright Superintendent Ted Hastings, with detectives Steve Arnott and Kate Fleming doing the heavy lifting. Each season kicks off with a new case, usually a high-ranking officer under suspicion, and what starts as a routine investigation usually spirals into something way bigger. We’re talking coverups, secret alliances, and a shadowy figure known only as “H” pulling strings behind the scenes. If you want a well-executed crime drama with great mystery at the center, this is your show. Oh, and with rumors swirling about a possible seventh season, you may get even more than you bargained for.

Other must-stream drama shows on BritBox

If “Line of Duty” isn’t your thing, BritBox still has plenty of drama worth checking out. First up is “Luther,” another one of my favorite British crime dramas. Idris Elba plays DCI John Luther, a brilliant but emotionally wrecked detective who’ll do whatever it takes to catch the worst criminals in London. The show’s got a real cat-and-mouse energy, especially when Luther’s tangled up with Alice Morgan, a genius sociopath who may or may not be his biggest weakness. If you like your detectives brooding and the stakes sky-high, this is a must.

Then there’s “The Tower,” a newer BritBox entry that’s all about secrets, power, and the fallout after a police officer and a teenage girl fall to their deaths from a London tower block. What sounds like a cut-and-dry case quickly unravels into something way more complicated. Gemma Whelan leads as a detective who’s brought in to sort through the lies, and the show wastes no time dropping you into the tension.

And if you want something long-running and reliable, “Vera” delivers in spades. Brenda Blethyn plays DCI Vera Stanhope, a sharp, no-nonsense investigator solving murders across the Northumberland countryside. The cases are grounded, the pacing is unhurried, and Vera herself is the kind of character who grows on you fast. It’s not flashy, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s steady, smart, and incredibly watchable.
