Looking for a great thriller on BritBox? Start with ‘Luther’

Idris Elba’s dark, intense detective drama is the perfect first stop if you want British crime TV with real bite.

The first thriller to watch when you sign up for BritBox is 'Luther.'

British TV still gets tagged as a little soft, polite, or cozy, which, sure, sometimes that reputation makes sense. But then there’s “Luther,” which pretty much kicks that idea through a window. Tara and I have been watching this show since the beginning, and there’s nothing gentle about it. This is a grimy, stylish, scary, morally messy thriller TV built around Idris Elba giving one of the great detective-show performances of all time. If you just signed up for BritBox and want the first thriller that proves British crime TV can hit hard, this is the one I’d start with.

Why ‘Luther’ is the must-watch thriller on BritBox

What “Luther” gets right immediately is Idris Elba. Elba is one of those actors I could watch endlessly — he’s just that interesting. He plays DCI John Luther like a man who’s always one bad day away from completely falling apart, which is exactly what makes the show so gripping. Luther is brilliant, obsessive, scary when he needs to be, and clearly carrying around way too much damage. You’re not just watching him solve crimes. You’re watching him try to stay on the right side of the line while every case pulls him closer to the darkness he’s chasing.

That darkness is what separates “Luther” from a regular detective show. It has police procedural bones, but it plays much more like a psychological thriller. A lot of the time, the question isn’t just who did it. It’s how awful is this going to get, how close is Luther going to get to the edge, and what is stopping him from becoming the kind of person he’s hunting? The cases are big, creepy, and sometimes wildly over-the-top, but that’s part of the fun.

The other huge piece is Alice Morgan. Ruth Wilson makes Alice one of the most memorable thriller characters of the whole series, because she’s terrifying and weirdly delightful at the same time. She’s brilliant, dangerous, and way too interested in Luther, which gives their relationship this electric charge that never feels safe. Every time she shows up, the show gets sharper. Their connection turns “Luther” into more than a cop-versus-killer story. It becomes a twisted little mirror game between two people who understand each other a little too well.

The tone is also a major reason this show sticks. “Luther” makes London feel like a pressure cooker. The city isn’t just a backdrop here — it’s empty flats, shadowy streets, police offices, crime scenes, rooftops, and quiet rooms where something awful always feels like it’s about to happen. The show also knows how to build dread. It’ll sit in a tense conversation for a few minutes, then suddenly snap into a chase, a murder, or some horrible reveal that makes you tense up. Massive Attack’s “Paradise Circus” opening theme helps set that mood too, giving the whole thing this heavy, uneasy pulse before an episode even starts.

From a BritBox standpoint, this is kind of the perfect first thriller because it gives you the full promise of the service in one show. It’s distinctly British, but it doesn’t feel small. It’s smart, nasty, emotional, and led by a movie-star-level performance from Elba. And because the show builds so much around Luther’s personal damage and his relationship with Alice, you really want to start at Season 1, Episode 1 and watch in order. The cases matter, but the real hook is watching Luther’s life get messier, darker, and more impossible to escape.

What is ‘Luther’ about?

“Luther” follows DCI John Luther, a brilliant London detective who’s great at catching killers and not nearly as good at protecting himself from the darkness around him. He’s the kind of investigator who can see patterns other people miss, but that gift comes with a cost. The deeper he gets into each case, the more the show pushes on the uncomfortable question at the center of his life: how different is Luther from the people he’s trying to stop?

The series mixes brutal murder cases with a larger character story about obsession, grief, guilt, and moral compromise. Luther’s job keeps pulling him toward violent, unstable people, but his most complicated relationship is with Alice Morgan, a genius killer who becomes both a threat and a strange, unexpected ally. It’s part crime thriller, part psychological horror, and part antihero drama, with Elba holding the whole thing together. If you like detective shows that are messy, intense, and not afraid to go big, “Luther” is a ridiculously easy show to get hooked on.

Other must-stream thriller shows on BritBox

If “Luther” works for you and you want to stay in that dark British thriller lane, BritBox has a few other strong picks too. “River” is a grief-heavy detective story starring Stellan Skarsgård as a brilliant investigator haunted by the dead, so yeah, it’s not exactly light viewing, but it’s powerful.

“Payback” is more of a twisty crime conspiracy thriller, following a woman who gets pulled into a dangerous criminal world after her husband’s murder.

Also, “Wallander” gives you Kenneth Branagh as a weary detective working bleak, emotionally heavy cases that feel quiet on the surface but hit hard underneath. All three make sense after “Luther,” especially if you want more British crime TV with real mood.
